ABB invented the southern rock genre and they are the much better band

I like Skynyrd's songs better, but the definitive Southern Rock band is the ABB.
Freebird is dedicated to Duane.
Because of their reputation as a live act, and the raw sound of the guitars, I think the classic line up of Skynyrd's guitarists - Gaines, Rossington and Collins is actually underrated, from a technician standpoint.
Anything can be layered correctly in the studio, but they pulled that attack off dozens of times live. The return lineups have even been more impressive live, from a technical standpoint - particularly when Thomasson and Medlocke joined Rossington in 1996 (until Thomasson left in 2005) - you had the principal singer/songwriter/lead guitarists from The Outlaws and Blackfoot join an original Skynyrd guitarist to form THE definitive Southern Rock all-star act.
Having said all of that, Duane was a better guitar player at 23 than all of those guys and Dickie was almost as good. The only bands who EVER had 2 guitar players even remotely that good - at least in their prime production days - were Priest, Maiden and Def Leppard - although Skynyrd was right there with them (with 3).

I really feel like Skynyrd took the Southern Rock sound to a whole new level and the three-guitar attack set them apart from other bands.

I saw them both perform live on multiple occasions from 1974-1977, and Skynyrd was the much better live act at the time. People do not give Skynyrd enough credit for their musicianship. They were tighter (better rehearsed) as a band than the Allman Brothers, and their interaction with the audience was at a whole different level.
That being said, I'd much rather listen to an Allman Brothers album. Their music is more stimulating when you remove the visual aspect of the performance.

Skynyrd had a good live show if you like seeing the same show every night. ABB are widely considered to be one of the greatest live acts of all time. While I never had the opportunity to see them I don't really buy that Skynyrd was the "better" live act at least not by my definition of a good live act.
Also look at ABB now still a great band while Skynyrd is a joke

Exactly. I love Skynyrd but to use the OP's words--Legendary and Influential--those apply much more to the Allmans.
