What's described in the OP is what invariably happens when success outpaces maturity.

Saw the original lineup 2X circa 1980. Will put it like this: I'd rather hear their A-game than any hard rock band in R&R history.

quote:

Why would you lend your talents to Michael Jackson? I just don’t fricking get it,

Alex and I agree on this.

I remember seeing some music person say, "Well, you can only work with the Van Halen brothers so long." Maybe one of their producers or engineers?

Mike and Sammy are salt of the Earth - people work with them, happily, over and over. DLR, Eddie and Alex? Talented but difficult.

It's so dumb that we got stuck with Eddie's fat son over Michael Anthony

I am far from a Van Halen fan. Never really got it. I was a bit younger, but there were much better and heavier bands out already during their heyday.

Said that to say I saw Mammoth WVH open for Metallica and didn't know he was Eddies kid until we were talking about it before they took the stage. He's a a damn good guitar player. And his stuff sounds better than VH IMO.

don't know many people who seem to be enjoying life more than Sammy.

I'll always prefer the DLR version of Van Halen but, I like Sammy.

No reason to slag on Wolfgang, not his fault his Dad and uncle treated Anthony the way they did. Wolfie is actually a talented dude in his own right. Saw Mammoth open for Guns N' Roses, pretty good band.

Huge fan of the band.

But I take anything Alex (and Ed before he passed) says with a massive grain of salt.

These guys have flip flopped and contradicted themselves for years. Alex and Ed said horrible things about Roth, then Hagar, then Roth again, then Hagar again. They completely shite on Anthony. Roth is a weird guy, but I would have to know the context of his objection to the tribute…I mean the whole point would have been a tribute so why would he object to a pause in the show?

I’ll still never forget the interview where they questioned Hagar’s “work ethic” regarding the greatest hits album, then proceeded to put out one album of truly original material in the next 20 plus years, while Hagar had multiple albums, tours etc, solo and with other bands.

You know who was behind getting Sammy out in the 90s and bringing in Gary Cherone?

Alex.

He also lobbied for a new manager, Mr. Ray Danniels, after theirs died. Cherone’s band Extreme was also managed by Danniels. Guess who was married to Danniels’ sister?

Alex.

I don’t know how Rush put up with Danniels for their whole career. Misplaced loyalty I guess.

I’m glad this happened. I have zero desire to see VH without Ed.

Without EVH it wouldn't have been VH IMO. But a tour honoring EVH with Alex, Michael, DLR/SH, and Wolfgang on guitar would've been fitting.

That wasn't my takeaway from the book I read.

When Ed was at his worst with the substances, yes, he was a POS.

There's many others anecdotal accounts of other times in his life, when he wasn't blasted on something, where he comes across as a really nice, well adjusted dude.

While I think it's disgusting how they treated Mike, I don't hold that against Wolfgang.

The last Mammoth album is really good. Wolfgang it's a one man band, and super talented. There's a song on it where he used Frankenstein through his dad's rig and there's no mistaking that sound/tone. It's very well done.

I only saw VH live once, at the Centroplex in December 91 on the frick tour with Alice In Chains opening. Other than AIC kicking major arse, to this day it's the worst arena concert I've ever been to, by far.

I was so disappointed (and drunk!) that by halfway thru the concert, after the umpteenth unneeded 10 to 15 minute solo slot, I started yelling SAMMY YOU frickING SUCK at the top of my lungs every time there was a break in the crowd noise. He heard me. I saw him pause for a split second and cock his head.

I kinda feel bad about that now, because as the years have gone by, and even though I hate all but maybe 2 songs from the Hagar era, I've seen enough to realize just how fricking cool and down to earth Sammy is.

Roth was by far the better front man for VH, but I'd never want to spend any time with that a-hole.

I'd love to knock back a few drinks and hang with Sammy.
