Tough because there was so much great different music.

Don’t Look Back in Anger - Oasis
(cool obscure)

All Around The World (La La La) - ATC (A Touch of Class )

Just the way It Is Baby - The Rembrandts

Then the Country genre was awesome too.

I hate the gin blossoms, but whenever this kind of topic comes up they are immediately the first thing that comes to mind. They just absolutely SOUND like 1990s music.

The making of a great compilation tape, like breaking up, is hard to do and takes ages longer than it might seem. You gotta kick off with a killer, to grab attention. Then you got to take it up a notch, but you don’t wanna blow your wad, so then you got to cool it off a notch. There are a lot of rules

25 songs isn't enough to encapsulate the decade. This list is 50 songs. I tried to cross genres, span the 90s, and not repeat too many already listed songs. This list still doesn't hit all the big bands (no Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Foo Fighters, Metallica), skips most pop and vocalists, skips nu metal, doesn't scratch the small bands, and is overly US-centric.

Acid Bath - Paegan Love Song
Alice In Chains - Them Bones
Anthrax - Only
Belly - Feed The Tree
Bjork - Human Behavior
Boys II Men - It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday
The Breeders - Cannonball
Carcass - Heartwork
The Connells - Slackjawed
Coolio - Fantastic Voyage
Corrosion of Conformity - Clean My Wounds
Cracker - Low
Down - Stone the Crow
Dr. Dre - Let Me Ride
Elastica - Stutter
Eve 6 - Open Road Song
Faith no More - Everything's Ruined
Fishbone - Fight the Youth
Garbage - Only Happy When It Rains
Goo Goo Dolls - Long Way Down
GWAR - Jack The World
Helmet - Unsung
Hole - Violet
In Flames - Ordinary Story
Juvenile - 400 Degreez
KMFDM - Power
L7 - Pretend We're Dead
Lil Wayne - Tha Block Is Hot
Madness - Saturday Night Sunday Morning
Megadeth - Countdown to Extinction
Ministry - N.W.O.
Motorhead - Born To Raise Hell
Nine Inch Nails - Wish
Pantera - Cowboys from Hell
Porno for Pyros - Pets
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Under the Bridge
Refused - New Noise
Republica - Ready to Go
Skid Row - Slave to the Grind
Slayer - Divine Intervention
Snoop Dogg - Gin and Juice
Soul Asylum - Somebody to Shove
Soundgarden - Rusty Cage
Sparklehorse - Someday I will Treat You Good
Stone Temple Pilots - Sour Girl
Stretch Princess - Sorry
They Might Be Giants - Birdhouse In Your Soul
Tori Amos - Cornflake Girl
Tupac Shakur - California Love
White Zombie - Thunderkiss '65

You're good with that one. I still have it on maxi-disc CD.
Gibby Haynes from the butthole surfers does the vocals on that one. He was high on acid when it was recorded...

While I agree, this just took spot 16 because of how ubiquitous this song was in the 90's. You just couldn't get away from it

Reviewing the other entries now.

A note on my qualifying metrics- I'm looking for the representative sound of the 90's. That's why Dr. Dre or They Might Be Giants aren't making my list. I love them both, but they are their own things that just happened to be in the 90's. Someone could say the same thing about my Jane's Addiction entry, and that may be on the chopping block once we get to 25.
