From hearing all the lore, I always had this impression that John was this snobby hipster who thought he was too good for the Beatles toward the end, though I always appreciated and loved his songwriting. After watching Get Back, I've come to realize that's a load of crap. He seemed like such a genuine and authentic guy in the film, and for some reason that makes me even more sad that he went out the way he did.
I think we could have seen a Beatles reunion at some point had he not died.
Yeah, that is a misnomer.
People think (even big Beatles fans) that John was an arrogant, aloof, brooding hippy. Nothing could be further from the truth. He was a jokester, a prankster, and he had a viciously dry sense of humor. He was a loose, happy-go-lucky guy who was funny as hell.

I made this a topic on the OT and it went over like a fart in church.
Obviously they don't like Lennon.

people who hate his politics (includes me), people who think he was a hypocrite (also includes me), Zep fans who are jealous of the biggest band of all time, assorted fans of assorted shitty acts, and most annoying of all, people who insist on mentioning that dimebag person and piggybacking on Lennon instead of starting a separate thread

He'd be a moderate by today's standards. And we are all hypocrites in some shape or fashion.

Is Chapman out? Dead? Or still in prison?
Dumb enough to let Hinckley out…..
Still alive, in prison, still married to the same woman he was married to when he murdered John, still genuinely thinks Yoko and Sean will forgive him one day and he will live out his days as a man of God.

John's heroin use helped drive John towards leaving the band. I think that out of the Beatles, John had a view of the band that he tried to escape and move on to the next phase - whatever that maybe. I think some of that had to do with his heroin use and trying move away from the band's shadow. I think in time, with he and McCartney connecting in the mid 70's and prior to his death, his view of it all wasn't so negative. He even said that at the age he could identify with the fans who were his same age: like "how are you? we've all grown up together". Having Sean and being a closer father changed his view on things and towards Paul for sure. Hell, it was Paul's 'Coming Up' that spurned John into a songwriting fenezy

John redefined music.
And then redefined pussy whipped
Most of the hate he gets stems from his obsession with Yoko and demand that she be recognized and respected as an artist. You need only to watch his performance with Chuck Berry to understand.
Chuck Berry is a legend and a pioneer. And one of John’s heroes and idols. He has never met him before this performance so it was a once in a lifetime dream come true. And he brought Yoko. And he put her on the stage with them. And she shite on it. A lot.
John and Chuck
All that said, the hate he gets is undeserved and he’s definitely taken on a strange warped persona in pop culture following his death.

“frick a pig. It’s Paul”
I always get a laugh out of all the stuff Paul wrote it was Coming Up that John Lennon was like “damn that’s some good shite”

Paul: writes Silly Love Songs
John: Ugh, there he goes with his shite granny music again!
Paul: writes Coming Up
John: Hell YES! Now I'm inspired, I gotta write more gems like that!

Dude was a piece of shite. Beatles are the most overrated boy band of all time!
It seems clear in hindsight that the gentle icon the hippies worshipped was actually a man with very serious psychological problems who often flew into uncontrollable fits of rage, which he took out on the women in his life.
As his critics sometimes point out, all you have to do is go straight to his songs. The man who sang “imagine no possessions” lived a millionaire’s life in a posh New York hotel. The man who sang “imagine no religion” was obsessed with every spiritual and New Age fad that came his way, including Hindu meditation, the I-Ching, and astrology of all kinds. The man who sang “all you need is love” was a bitter, violent, and angry man who abused his family and friends. The man who praised having “nothing to kill or die for” helped finance and publicize radical groups who extolled the use of violence. Quite literally, everything his fans see personified in the icon of John Lennon represents the ideals the man himself either couldn’t or wouldn’t live up to.
