30th anniversary of 7th Son of a 7th Son

Without question, my favorite Maiden album. This Billboard article has some killer reminiscences from other metal guys:
That is how I have ALWAYS felt. The art still gives me the chills:

The concept, the voices, the scope of the record is enigmatic. The music is direct, but with funky leads and progressive arrangements. It's music that they made for themselves, which is a great accomplishment for that point in their career. If you criticize the keyboards or the clean production, you're missing the point. It's easy to be obscure and messy. It's hard to have a point of view and stand for something. Maiden is focused, powerful, intelligent, dynamic, organized. They're not selling out. They're making other bands sound sloppy and weak. Every song is so memorable, they could drop any tune from Seventh Son into a set list today, and the crowd would roar. Thirty years later, that's remarkable. "The Evil that Men Do," "Seventh Son," and "The Clairvoyant" are all time favorites.

Was when they really lost the plot. Songs were too proggy. Just sounded soul less. Maybe two good songs on the album, if that.
Doesn't begin to compare to the first 5 albums they released. It's not even in the same universe as TNOTB.
The tour was pretty good. Saw 'em at UNO. Opened with Moonchild.
Show started about an hour late. Frehley's Comet was the opening act, and they got so drunk they were 45 minutes late for the show. Was a pitiful, sloppy mess on their part.

I'm wondering if you weren't the drunk one. I have literally never seen anything but hardcore professionalism from Maiden.

Pretty sure Frehley's Comet are who he's suggesting were drunk.

I was at that show too, front row floor. Agree with you about Frehley’s Comet. Ace was staggering drunk and they were awful. Totally disagree with you about Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. It’s a great album and I’m not sure how you could explain there only being two good songs on that album. It’s a masterpiece.

My nostalgic self would insist Number Of The Beast or Piece Of Mind are the best, but my objective self listens to 7th Son more than either of those albums.

Not Maiden, Ace Frehley and the other members of his band, Frehley's Comet. They were so loaded they could barely play.

Number of the Beast is a masterpiece.
Then Powerslave, Killers, Iron Maide, and finally Piece of Mind.
Most of the 7th son just bores me. I do like the title track and Can I Play with Madness. And maybe Moonchild on the right day.
The rest of them do absolutely nothing for me.
That was actually the last Iron Maiden album I ever bought. They got so far away from the NOTB/Piece Of Mind/Powerslave style that I just lost interest.
Hell, their first two albums with Paul on vocals blow 7th Son into the weeds. Too much of too much on everything after Powerslave. Somewhere In Time was the first album of theirs I didn't love most every song on, and it got worse with 7th. They put too much thought into the songs and made them too long and overly complicated and lyrically tedious. A certain amount of spark just was missing. They had found a formula and were just painting by numbers. I found myself tuning out an wishing something else was on every time I heard it.

Matter of opinion, which you are entitled to, but you are definitely in the minority.

no no no no.... Dianno = nails on a chalkboard. 7th son is a fine record IMHO, easily as good as beast, piece and powerslave. I think the best one is somewhere in time. Different strokes I guess.
UP THE IRONS!!

Powerslave was my favorite. All of the power of the previous albums, with some of the exploration to come on the next two LPs. Plus the Powerslave live show was my favorite tour of theirs. They killed it at that show.
I like 7th Son a lot, but its further down the list. For me it doesn't make top 5 (PS, Killers, NOTB, POM, and IM), but comes in at number 6. I was at the UNO 7th Son show, but missed the opening act, didn't care to see that shite show. Maiden played great and out of the 7 times I've seen them it was the second best show behind the PS show.

It's weird that you put Powerslave on that side of the divide you are attempting to highlight - Powerslave has probably the longest average song length of any of their albums. It also has one of the most boring songs they ever did - The Duellists. Truly lacking in pizzazz. Back in the Village is pretty weak too.
Weakest overall song ever is Die with Your Boots On. TERRIBLE!

My personal favorite from that album and one of their most underrated, IMO. Killer riff, awesome bassline, cool lyrics, etc.

quote:It is truly exceptional. Wasted Years and Stranger in a Strange Land...truly, just at the top of their game. You know that's how it is when it seems as if the songs existed as a force of nature and the band just discovered them. I don't wanna live in a universe where these songs don't exist.
I think the best one is somewhere in time.

Trying to decide what is the best Maiden album is similar to trying to decide who was the hottest Playmate of the Year. It is nearly impossible.
