Name a better stretch of heavy prog rock songs on any non greatest hits album ever...it doesn't exist.
Actually, the entire Lateralus album is already the goat but the second half is transcendent.

I actually prefer the first half.

The ending is perfect and the beginning / middle is as well.
The album is a masterpiece. I sometimes go back and forth between it and Aenima as being their best but it usually is my favorite.

Over the years I've flip flopped on which is better b/w Aenima and Lateralus but I'm pretty firmly in the Lateralus camp now.
Ironically some of my favorite Tool songs are from Aenima yet I believe Lateralus is the better complete expression of the Tool musical ethos as a start to finish listening experience.

I do enjoy Dream Theater and Scenes From a Memory is my favorite work of theirs by far but I've always found much of their work to be like something produced by a prog metal super AI. It comes off as almost too perfect and perhaps too crafted in some sense.
Scenes from a Memory being the one exception I suppose. That one is quite listenable.
ETA: I forgot how good Awake is too.
