1974 was a musical wasteland.

Today driving home from Shreveport I was listening to an American Top 40 broadcast from June 1974 on XM. I enjoy these things because they are nostalgic for me. However, I got on board in the late 70's. I was 8 years old at the time of this original broadcast.
I was in shock at what I heard today. These songs were HORRIBLE. Did you people know that "The Streak" by Ray Stevens was atop the charts for 3 consecutive weeks in 1974? It was no. 2 today, but it shared the top 10 with great stuff like "My Girl Bill" by Jim Stafford and "The Show Must Go On" by Three Dog Knight (fricking circus music). "Midnight at the Oasis" by Maria Muldaur... seriously? "Billy Don't Be a Hero" was in there somewhere also.
Today it all became crystal clear. Disco was basically born in 1975. THIS is why disco happened. As bad as disco was, it was much more interesting than the tripe on the radio just before it made its entry. Disco filled this vacuum.

Won't get any fight from me that in 1974 the Top 40 was pretty lame overall but as others point out there was still plenty of good music going on.
1974 marked the death of the hippy/folk rock generation as mainstream music. Good riddance.
Most posters seem to have responded narrowly by naming albums were released in 1974. I checked as well and none of these bands released anything new that in 1974 either:
April Wine
Pat Travers
Leslie West
Foghat
The Scorpions did have a forgettable 1974 album though.
But you could listen to the King Biscuit Flour Hour in 1974 as well as The Bay City Rollers.
