It was a strong period for popular music, for sure.

Every poll of legendary musicians lists the Beatles as the greatest and most influential band of all time so your opinion is not valid.

Contrast that with the last 5 years of popular music.

What?????

The last five years have been fantastic. The age of stadium bands is mostly dead though. So you don't have these records everyone has like you did in the 60s/70s.

Beggar's Banquet
Let It Bleed
Sticky Fingers
Exile on Main St

The best 4 albums ever strung together by anyone.

I'd throw in the live; Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out as well just before Let It Bleed.

Probably because you couldn’t often fill a stadium with people willing to listen to music that’s been put out the last five years by current bands.

concert sales are up fwiw, growing ~10% a year.

Yeah, there aren't stadium bands anymore but also people don't like going to stadiums to see shows.

More people alive today and probably more bands which accounts for increased concert sales. I doubt today’s bands with today’s music could pack many stadiums like they could in the day.

From a production value alone, the Beatles were ahead of their time. They were at best though, just average musicians, except Harrison, he was pretty good. However Led Zeppelin had 3 outstanding musicians and two studio rats in Page and Jones.

Mick and the Boys were different than both of them. They were pretty straight forward rock n roll and blues. Good stuff

You just don’t have the quality of creative music today to put out the great records like you did back then.

No matter how you look at it The Beatles musically were the most important and influential band of all time
You would have to be in deep denial not to recognize that well documented fact.

Concert sales are outpacing population growth by wide margins.

There are plenty of musicians that are putting together amazing works of art. The problem is the market has fragmented a lot. People listen to wildly different styles of music, so you don't get concentration.

Music coming out these days is really fantastic. Its a shame you don't see that but if you are closed to it, then you are closed to it.

There will be another black sabbath masters of reality (my favorite album from that time period) but there also won't be another war on on drugs - lost in the dream.

All I am saying is ‘68 to ‘72 > any period since and today’s music pales so much in comparison it’s difficult to lower my standards enough to get into it.

You really should try. Because they aren't making new albums from that time period, but there will always be new music. And much of it is fantastic!

I have yet to enjoy all the music produced from 68-72, no point in wasting time on anything new.

Would 1977-1982 be the most transitional period of music? The Bee Gees to AC/DC on top 40? Joy Division in between?
