TOMATOMETER

quote:

It's very much a Zack Snyder production: unwieldy but absorbing, awash in bone-crunching violence, stilted dialogue, ridiculous-verging-on-sublime needle drops (hello, Cranberries) and have-it-both-ways political subtext.

Imagine the most glorious, goriest orgy of zombie excess. Now imagine that's not nearly enough and you'll have a pretty good idea of what's going on in "Army of the Dead."

It starts off great. But then it goes on. And on. And on. And takes itself ever more seriously at each turn.

While it's the best film Snyder has made since his last of the Dead, it's also one that continually hints at the more satisfying work it might have been.

You absolutely feel the runtime toward the end but honestly, #ArmyOfTheDead rips. Just let Zack Snyder keep making zombie movies!

I found myself wanting more from #ArmyOfTheDead overall. It's well cast and often funny. But despite blending the heist/zombie genres, there's not much newness added to either. One or two fresh setpieces amid familiar blood n gore, but outside of that, you've seen it more or less

#ArmyOfTheDead’s opening credits sequence is delicious, pure camp. While the rest of the film doesn’t sustain that tone (& meanders), there are lots of wild, deftly executed concepts & scenes centered on the heist. Even more audacious is there’s an unexpected infusion of heart.

Army of The Dead is a violent, gory, and bloody blast. Zack Snyder’s latest is a ridiculously fun and over the top genre bending zombie film. While the entire cast is great, Matthias Schweighöfer steals every scene. Oh, and the opening credits are absolutely epic. #ArmyoftheDead

Army of the Dead: Zack Snyder is having an absolute blast, delivering a jaw dropping/jaw-removing) amount of slo-mo bloodshed. The gore and mayhem on display is lovingly captured and, more importantly, gleefully faceted within the film. #ArmyOfTheDead

@ZackSnyder "Army of the Dead" was a helluva ride!

Scary, action-packed & fun!

A wildly entertaining firepower zombie flick that features some of the best death scenes ever!

#ArmyOfTheDead was VERY much my kind of thing. As hoped, the setting + Zack Snyder's eye = a downright stunning display of zombie mayhem and carnage. Fell mighty hard for the whole ensemble, but I might need a 2.5 hour movie about just these two ...

I saw #ArmyoftheDead and I’m all-in on this world. Pretty sure Zack Snyder just beat WB to the punch and made his own Suicide Squad movie, but with zombies. How about that.

All I’ll say about Army of the Dead for now is that Zack Snyder should direct more zombie movies. Full review tomorrow.

Army of the Dead is a letdown. It has a few twists on the zombie genre but beyond that slowly meanders through its plot without intrigue or conflict. Most of the action is relegated to the 3rd act and by then it’s too little too late. Was hoping for more from the cool premise.

One of life's universal truths is that reactions to a Zack Synder trailer are meaningless

Based on previous early reactions to literally any movie, It must be god awful if the initial reactions have any sort of negative aspect at all (first couple say it’s pretty long)

Aren’t these initial reaction always from hacks paid to give good reviews to throw off the initial Tomatometer scale so that when the actual critics start giving it bad reviews, it’s already too late.

Like...this happens all the time.

I wouldn't go so far as to say they are all paid hacks but the early previews almost always go out to people that are going to more than likely to enjoy that kind of movie.

They aren't showing this to the average Joe who doesn't like Snyder and doesn't care one way or another about zombie movies.

Marvel and WB won't show their flicks to a person who bitches about superhero movies. Universal won't show Jurassic World 3 to somebody who has trashed the most recent movies. An indie flick isn't playing to a critic who prefers summer blockbusters etc etc etc.

Jesus Christ 2.5 hours?

Both the Zombie genre and the heist genre work much much better in contained spaces. There’s no reason to expand it that long

There needs to be a reckoning on run times for movies. We’ve given these directors too much power because we’re afraid we’ll miss out on the best version of a movie, when I think most directors- even the great ones- make better movies when they have constraints to work within.

Smells like 30 minutes of fat for a simple zombie heist plot. Which is par for the course with Snyder.

For reference, this is the runtime for MI: Fallout.

Zombieland was a cool buck fiddy.

28 Days Later was just under 2 hours.

Zach gonna Zach though. Incapable of telling a story with a reasonable runtime.

Watched this at the movies the other day. I had an absolute blast. This is a really fun film, and I recommend watching it on the big screen, if possible. Releases on Netflix tomorrow.

Plan on watching this in the morning, but man that 2.5 hour run time is pretty daunting. Hopefully it’s entertaining enough to negate that.

It flew by for me. I never once thought about the runtime. He could've cut out some stuff, but I think you'll like it. I was genuinely surprised at how much I enjoyed it.

If anything movies need to be longer. Justice League and Kong vs. Godzilla were hampered by sub 2 hour run times.

These are live action movies for adults, not damn Ice Age movies. Put your phone away and watch the movie you pheasants.

Woke up early to watch and was happy I did. I enjoyed it very much for what it was, and it had a decent amount of humor mixed in with tons of action and gore. It never took itself seriously and was exactly what it should be on the surface.

As someone who isn't a fan of non-traditional zombies, I found the addition of these Alpha zombies interesting and they were a nice balance to the traditional "shambler" type.

All in all, it delivered exactly what I hoped it would, and I am wanting a sequel set in Mexico City, please.
