Even though it will likely be inferior to the 1985 film directed by Steven Spielberg, times have changed and we need to make up for the fact that the original was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and failed to win a single Oscar that year.

ETA: This time it's a musical.

I liked the '85 movie.

The church scene and the final reunion scene were great.

FFS...

Well, I guess if Disney can shamelessly grasp for cash, Spielberg can, too.

I watched the original movie not too long ago, and, man, did that movie portray black men in a negative light. I actually thought that Spielberg was pretty savage for underscoring the absolute abusive and incestuous nature of the freed slave men.

It’s my understanding it’s based off of the musical (which has some differences from the movie) that started in 2005 and had four US tours up through 2017-ish. It won a Grammy and a Tony award for its revival in 2017.

When it came on tour here with Broadway of America it sold out pretty quick. I heard it was excellent on stage though.

IF the filmmakers had any balls, they'd subvert expectations and race swap all the characters to white people.

How many film adaptations of musical adaptations of oscar-nominated films have been nominated for best picture before?

What in that trailer reminds you of anything you've seen in the past 5 best picture winners? Who have you ever heard or read express the opinion that The Color Purple was robbed? It was fine, and it was part of one of the worst set of best picture nominees ever.

They made this movie because the stage show has been a huge hit, and those often get turned into movies. The Mean Girls musical is also currently being adapted into a movie. (But probably only because the original Mean Girls film didn't win enough Oscars, right?)

Hate this fricking movie. Tried to watch it when it first come out, walked out the room. Gave it another shot 4-5 years ago, turned that shite off.

It was race & gender baiting the way they could bait back then, & a whole lot of white people & women fell for it.

If you didn't know any better, you'd have thought all black guys were pos. frick that movie.

The original was outstanding. One of the few films to do its source material justice.

the new TCP will not win best picture. The newer Academy leadership and membership is about moving forward. If it is really good it may get the West Side Story treatment -- a nom and possibly a technical award. But unlikely.

And this year is stacked with the new offerings from Scorsese, Nolan, Ridley, Alexander Payne and Todd Haynes. Expect each of their films to get a nod for best pic.
