Cabin in the Woods is a great movie, but you are right that it isn't really horror. It's satire with comedy and horror elements. It Follows and Cabin in the Woods are the best movies listed in the OP.

Babadook is just an average type movie that I don't feel bad that I watched and think it's definitely worth recommending for a single viewing. I liked the symbolism of the whole movie which elevated it and made it more interesting imo.

The Conjuring was kind of your run of the mill blockbuster horror movie. I kind of find the "based on a true story" thing in movies and in particular horror movies to be cheesy, so that's a mark against it in my book. Its production value is definitely higher than a Badook though.

I saw that As Above, So Below was in the $5 movie bin at Walmart the other day and considered getting it. I don't base my tastes on rotten tomatoes scores, but a lot of critics hated it and many of the few positive reviews were not stunning endorsements.

And yet Ive seen it here mentioned quite a few times and a few have included it in their responses here. Could anyone explain why the movie receives such criticism?

I guess I need to rewatch cabin in the woods because I absolutely hated it when I saw it. I did not know it was a parody going into it though.

As above, so below is a found footage movie which automatically makes half of its reviewers hate it. If you can put up with the shaky cam it has a cool story and a very spooky environment that just gets more and more claustrophobic as it goes on.

Yeah, it sort of really sucks.

But I have no problem with people who like fun horror.

Evil Dead
Drag me to hell
Cabin

I prefer horror films that have potential real terror..

Because your mind might betray you. Action movies have knife guys...it's the horror movies that you don't understand that resonate.

I like good ghost and devilish type movies with possession and exorcists. Any good ones?

Nah but I thought it was better than Babadook and Cabin in the woods.

Never did understand the dislike for "Cabin". No, it's not a horror, strictly speaking, but a damned good movie in whatever genre it belongs. It actually has an original idea and execution, which is more than one can say about 95% of movies, horror or not.

I can promise you The Grudge is not scary at all. It's about as scary as The Ring is, which isn't much.

Unlike "The Ring," where the American remake is about as good as, and possibly even better than, the original, the Japanese original ('Ju-on') is a bit better than the remake. Not much, but a bit. Neither were particularly good. They feel like generic Japanohorror made to meet demand rather than articulated cinematic visions unto themselves.

It's a fun, original, and interesting concept, and it actually says something. I can see being disappointed if you go into it thinking that you are getting a horror movie, but I don't see it sucking.

That's the problem with being a skeptic in the modern world. For me, "based on a true story" horror seems to be a poor recommendation when the most horrific "true stories" in the real world are generally man's inhumanity to man, not ghosts and demons and whatever other paranormal phenomena that would make major newspaper headlines if they were even remotely credible events. If you are disinclined to believe in demonic possession, for instance, you start out finding it difficult to take the movie seriously. But if the movie sells itself as just straight-up fictional horror, you can watch it as a terrifying "what if we lived in a much more fricked-up world?" scenario. You don't have to keep suppressing your 'oh come on' reactions because the movie makes no attempt to convince you to go against your common sense.

Eh. To each his own. We all got our issues, right? And lots of perfectly intelligent people have believed in ghosts and demons and Evil Easter Bunny.

Man I was 13 when I first saw the ring. Bought a ticket for it planning on sneaking into 8 mile and it didn't work out so I had to go see it. Scared the ever living shite out of me

The conjuring, insidious, and the one that's in documentary style where the old lady slowly gets possessed and turns into some kind of snake at the end and tries to eat that kid...that shite was disturbing.

I also think the visit is really underrated

paranormal activity gets a lot of hate but I saw it opening night when it was only in select theatres and nobody really knew what it was. That was the most scared I've been in a theatre since the ring

Anyone see the movie Hush?

I'm making my old lady watch a scary movie Sunday night and thinking of that one.

Or if anyone has another suggestion for Netflix, Amazon Prime or Hulu streaming.

I didn't like Hush very much, but if your old lady doesn't watch much horror she'd probably like it.
