I was hoping they found more footage of the Normandy landings...too bad most of the footage and stills from that day were ruined.

Tomorrow is Saipan and French Hedgerow country, then Peleliu and the march toward Germany(Market Garden, Battle of Scheldt, Battle of Hurtgen Forest, and all action between....then perhaps The Bulge??).

If anyone is interested, I found the short documentary that was mentioned during tonight's episode, With the Marines at Tarawa. It's pretty damn cool.

Bad arse show. I like how it shows a lot of the Pacific action. When most think of WW2, Europe is what comes to mind. Those Japs took a beating and were determined. The footage of the civilians killing themselves was something. My wife couldn't watch this with us, but my son and I deeply appreciate the show and the Americans that served during those times.

I think that whale was German

they play a few reruns then a new one. At least that has been the trend so far.
Can't wait for the Band of Brothers series Pacific to come out.

yeh the jumping and taking their children with them. Plus all the Jap Soldiers killing themselves instead of surrendering. Up to Thousands at a time. Blowing themselves up in the bunkers. 3000 charging in the middle of the night with sticks and knives. That had to be scary as shite. Fighting and shooting at one another is one thing when both sides try not to get killed. But when the other side says frick it and charges like barbarians with clubs, that's crazy.

That was crazy. A knife on the end of a stick. I cannot even imagine the mentality of both sides

great story about the injured man at the San Antonio hotel

HIs whole story was incredible last night as he was in the group that got bombed accidentally by their own men when the air strike team released a bit too soon. 100 men died from friendly bombs that day and another 100 or so where injured.

He said he looked in front of him and the man in front of him had a huge piece of metal stuck in him then he moved his head the other way and the man behind him was dead. He couldn't move his arm and his eye was bleeded. He said he knew he could just lay there and he would die adn be out of that mess but he decided he wanted to make love to his wife again so he pulled himself with one arm into a ditch and a medic happened to find him. He asked the medic's name and he said "Jesus".

To Charles Sheffell

I believe that was Saipan right? They were told by the Emporer that the Americans were savages and they would rape their families and torture them and do horrible things to them, so they were determined to committ suicide.

Was almost unreal watching them find the dead bodies of entire families in caves blown to bitws by their own grenade, jumping off cliffs to their deaths, drowning themselves, hanging, etc... I don't know if I could have handled seeing that in real life.

I have a new respect for my grandfathers generation after watching this. CAn't wait to see the rest of these and I will definitely be buying the DVD set when they come out.

I was privileged enough to do a valuation survey on one of the last surviving working examples of these. Took it out on the blood river out of Springfield LA. Really gives you an uneasy feeling riding in one of these. You are a sitting duck on a slow boat to china.
