This movie is one big metaphor. Wolverine failed his universe (he really didn't, but that is how he feels) and all of the other X-men are gone. Deadpool arrives to pull him into the new universe (MCU).

We can all thank Ryan Reynolds for taking care of this character. I can’t think of a more perfect actor/character fit. It’s literally not possible for anyone else to play him.

RR to Deadpool is the same as RDJ as Ironman - it was like the characters were written with them in mind. you could toss in Evans as Cap as well.
