Yeah, I watched The BFG with my son the other night and was floored when the credits rolled and a big fat "Directed by Steven Spielberg" came up on the screen.

I wouldn't go that far. The whole idea started with Clarke's short story "The Sentinel." Elements of other Clarke short stories were also included in the 2001 script, e.g. Encounter in the Dawn is the basis for the "Dawn of Man" scene

He really has. I feel like their used to be something really special about a Spielberg movie and now that luster has worn off for one reason or another.

The fact that the argument can even be made is a testament to the quality of Nolan's film making.

middling oddities such as The Prestige

Pretty much stop giving credit to his opinion here.

Prestige will probably be Nolan's best movie IMO even after he is done. At worst top 3.

Dark Knight Rises wasn't bad just worst of a epic trilogy

Plus I'm inclined to give him a pass. I figure the Joker wouldn't be the main villain, but I don't see how he isn't involved in Nolan's plans at all.

So whatever idea he had was trashed and he had to wing it.

Interstellar is the movie I cared for the least he has made...and I don't even really dislike it. Nolan is the only director I make sure to see in the theater and in an imax format.

Can you actually make this argument, though?

Kubrick stretched the limits of film making and invented new ways of telling a story through visual media.

I'm not sure Nolan is there. He's good with twisting plot points to surprise the audience and does a solid job with creating suspense. But he's mostly just successful at making solid films. When I think Kubrick, I think Hitchcock or Lynch. Even Aronofsky falls more into the "Kubrick" category than Nolan. Charlie Kaufman on the screenwriter side of things.

As mentioned, Nolan is more of a Spielberg or Cameron. Knows how to make a good movie that appeals to a wide range of people and should be respected for what he does well.

This. Kubrick mastered different genres, different ways of telling stories, different focal points, different kinds of characters.

Nolan is certainly super talented, but I don't think he's tested himself outside of a small range of film styles.

Why not, especially if Dunkirk is as good as advertised? He's made 10 films, and was credited as writer in 9 of them (all but Insomnia).

All of them have been critical successes with an average tomatometer score of ~86% (lowest is 71%) and average metacritic score of ~ 76 (lowest is 66).

He's made films across genres and time periods, with various themes, and story telling techniques.. He's written and directed films based on original material, and he's adapted his work from established films, comic books, historical events, and science.

I mean The Dark Knight getting snubbed at the Academy Awards (along with Wall-E) was a major reason they changed the criteria for best picture.

And with all that being said, apparently he's about to release his most acclaimed film yet.

Obviously the greatest in anything are hard to compare (Jordan v. LeBron) because they have unique strengths, and I'm admittedly a biased fan of Nolan, and Kubrick's work spanned decades (although his films became much less frequent over the last couple), but I don't think it's ridiculous to make the comparison.

Between Memento, The Prestige, The Dark Knight trilogy, Inception, and Interstellar, I feel like there is some impressive range. And obviously Dunkirk is a new genre and basis, and apparently it's among his best.

Obviously he's only been making films for less than 20 years, but I think his trajectory is on the path to historical greatness.

Fincher and Villenueve have more in common with Kubrick. Nolan is a more of a new Spielberg.
I disagree with both of those statements.

Hasn't made a dud yet IMO.

Kubrick is rolling over in his grave. Nolan has 1 truly great movie and a few good ones; he couldn't hold Stan's jockstrap

ETA That being said, I'm very much looking forward to Dunkirk

Agreed. And I'm guessing The Prestige, Inception, The Dark Knight, and maybe Batman Begin and Interstellar are considered good?

Bingo. Prestige is a step above the others though.

I'd need to watch Insomnia again, very forgettable

Strongly disagree. It's good, no doubt, but I don't think it's as good as Dark Knight, Inception, or Memento.
