It's not TV or a movie so just putting it here since this is the closest board.

The wife and I saw Wicked last week as part of our anniversary. The set (at the Gershwin theater in NYC) was fantastic, the costumes were great and the acting and singing was spectacular. The problem though was that the story itself was kinda crappy.

For those that haven't seen the play, it's supposed to be the story of Oz based from the Wicked Witch of the West's perspective. It starts off well enough with her just being misunderstood but then it never leaves that plot and instead makes Glenda into a social-climbing bimbo and the Wizard into an evil tyrant who was just fooling the masses.

The play apparently has a large and loyal following and everyone we know that has seen it has raved about it, but both the wife and I were disappointed in how the author seemed to go to great pains to shite on the "good" characters, promote the "bad" ones as just misguided or misunderstood and set the rest of them up as being victims of the Wizard's evil machinations.

slight rant: on (off)

I've never seen it, but to be honest I've always wondered if it was sort of like you described. That's kinda disappointing since it's one of the most popular Broadway shows ever.

It’s interesting to me that this still occupies the Gershwin. We saw it in 2006, only a couple of years after it’s release in the Gershwin.

Has there not been a production come out since that can supplant it?

It’s a political allegory. It’s much more noticeable in the novel than in the play, probably because of the songs. Overall, I loved it. There is supposedly a movie version that will begin filming soon, although nothing official has been announced on who the leads will be. If you’re a fan of the classic film as I am, just enjoy it for the back story it provides into plot points such as why the witch wants the shoes so badly, where the scarecrow, tin man, and cowardly lion came from, why the witch has green skin, etc.

I don't know how they could do a film version without Idina Menzel (excuse me, Adele Nazeem), and Kristin Chenoweth. (Original Broadway Elphaba and Galinda).

When we saw it in 2006, as well as the traveling broadway cast a few years ago, both Menzel and Chenowith had moved on. The performers who played those roles were both excellent. Talent rises to the top and currently Wicked is one of the top broadway performances going right now.

I love me some Adele Dazeem, but I think that she and Kristin C. are too old to pull it off. The names I’ve heard thrown around are either Lea Michelle or Anna Kendrick as Elphaba and possibly Amanda Seyfreid as Glinda. All are good singers.

We saw it in December 2006 just after Ana Gasteyer took over as Elphaba. We thoroughly enjoyed it. Chenowith had come back and was fantastic.

I guess people can see it that way. If you were to block out the references to beloved Oz characters, it is still a very sweet and moving story. I dare you to see Defying Gravity live and not get goosebumps.

I also saw it while Ana Gasteyer was performing. She was awesome. Other than her Celine Dion impressions on SNL, I had no idea that she could sing.

Right?

We had heard how demanding that role was and she was great. Brought a little comedy to it as well.

LM could pull it off.

If her singing is up to snuff, I bet Lily James could do Galinda justice.

Lea has the voice and she actually resembles Idina somewhat. They played mother and daughter on Glee. Lily James has the look, but the jury is out on her singing until the new Mamma Mia movie comes out.

I'll take the testimony of others on that. I'm not bankrupting MoviePass for shite like MM that no one asked for.

The trend of shoehorning an entire artist/group's catalog into a cohesive story for the sake of a show run is the Broadway version of Hollywood doing gender-swap reboots of classic movies.

Mamma Mia was one of the most enjoyable musicals I’ve ever seen on stage. The movie wasn’t as good, although it wasn’t terrible. I doubt I’ll be going to see MM2 in the theater though. They apparently rewrote some plot history just so they could stick Cher in, since Donna specifically mentions that her mother is dead in Mamma Mia.

What do you mean? The show earns enough money to meet its lease obligations.

I agree with the OP. The show is well put together and a joy to watch. The story itself is pretty meh.

To be fair Baums had Oz do a lot of shady shite, being a conman and all, but he did help abduct Princess Ozma before he later retconned it.

And of course

quote:

"But isnt everything here green?", asked Dorothy. "No more than in any other city, replied Oz; but when you wear green spectacles, why of course everything you see looks green to you. The Emerald City was built a great many years ago, for I was a young man when the balloon brought me here, and I am a very old man now. But my people have worn green glasses on their eyes so long that most of them think it really is an Emerald City..."

Kind of a dick.

I've read the book and seen the play on Broadway. I liked both a lot.

Of course it's going to make the good characters look bad and vice versa. That's the point. Show a different point of view.
