I liked it for the most part.

Lois sucked as most female roles in superhero movies do. Why the hell she was planted in every pivotal scene I don't know. She's just Superman's side piece. They should have changed the entire story by writing her out of the script. Or delay the romance for a few movies.

Yes, there were some flaws to the movie and it was a little over the top. But I thought the point of the movie was showing how Superman grew up as a "different" person than everyone else and then had to grow into the morally superior superhero we recognize.

It's a shitty story to say Superman just is a wonderful messiah who never kills and cares for humanity and limits collateral damage when he can. It's much more interesting to portray the growth.

I think that is true for some people, definitely. However, it's not only those who have preconceptions of what a Superman movie should be that didn't like the movie. I know it's anecdotal, but my wife also did not enjoy Man of Steel. She's never read a Superman comic, or seen one of the old Superman movies. Superman could pretty much be any old super hero to her. And she was bored with the movie about half way through.

All I'm trying to say is yes, some people were disappointed because it wasn't the Superman movie they expected. But for others it was just that the movie wasn't very good, and there are valid criticisms that are leveled at the movie that are not based on preconceptions of how a Superman movie should be.

It's a decent superhero movie but not a good Superman movie.

Like going to see a movie about the Beatles and half of the music is by the Rolling Stones (because the writers thought that the Beatles would be cooler if they sounded like the Stones).

If you're a Beatles fan you'd be disappointed. If you're a general music fan you don't care because you got a movie with good music.

But that is the Superman story - that's the deal. The world was a little different when the character was created.

Having said that - as a long time Superman guy - I got the nod from Snyder to us about the tough decision Superman had to make to kill ole boy. While it robbed the film series of a great continuing villain - and I'm sure pissed off some purists (Mrs. Midnight was not super excited about it and expected me to react badly - particularly since the unfortunate incident in 2009) - but I was okay with this take on Superman, although I understand and respect the opinions of those who felt it deviated too far from the source material.

In this case, the choices made are not necessarily those I would have made (Pa Kent, again, killing ole boy) - but my bigger criticisms of the film was too much CGI and the battle sequence was probably a little too extended - but that's a common flaw of most of the superhero films - got to give the people what they want - the best is still Avengers, but that makes sense as Whedon is one of 2 best filmmakers directing these things.

There is a space between campy and "violent and gritty," that Superman can occupy. It took itself too seriously, which is part of the reason why the criticisms are quite valid. It THINKS it's a serious film with a great narrative arc and character development. But it doesn't end up that way.

I guess. But MoS didn't try to be over the top gritty and serious like Batman. It took a more Xmen feel, which I don't mind. I realize an Avengers tone is preferred with many and would've worked well too and would've given it some humor.

He was perfect. Only nostalgia would make someone miss Reeve. I found myself thinking Cavill would make a great Wolverine too.

Nostalgia and the fact that he was near-perfect for the role and did an amazing job.

It suffers because it isn't a good movie. And the problem with MoS fans...

quote:

Not because it's not a good movie. It clearly is.

Is that their entire premise begins here. It's a poorly constructed film that is "Really dark," so it's "interesting," and the action sequences "look cool." That's about it. Character motivations, good arcs, interesting turns are not present in the film, save for a special few.

In the face of many on here at least criticizing the film and the critical response itself, this

quote:

Not because it's not a good movie. It clearly is.

Is a weird position to take. ANd again, no one hates it, and most say they like quite a bit about the film, but the overall execution sucks *coughGoyercough*

quote:

I think it's not the movie that many viewers were picturing in their heads. Maybe they wanted a Superman who was a little more friendly and clever in his dialogue, or one that doesn't kill the super villain or they wanted more Clark Kent or something.

Wrong. They should avoid making Superman the Movie Redux because they'd fail miserably. There's no reason to go there.

Things I fricking hated to no end - 711, IHOP, Sears, Nikon and the other 5000 things prominently plugged. Lois Lane either should've been a bit player or not in the movie at all. And the casting for that one role was dreadful.

Things I disliked: The disaster porn portion was over the top. I get that superman can only be tested by an equal being, and that such a genocidal maniac would create such destruction, but still over the top. Then in the final scene, everything is fricking fine. After looking like Hiroshima.

Things I liked: pretty much everything else. I don't mind ghost zod at all, nor the certain nit picks (like his suit being on the ship and in wonderful condition or superman explaining to zod how to adapt to the planet in a taunt) it's not even worth discussing. I absolutely loved the costume design, particularly for the kryptonian survivors. I thought the casting was great (aside from lois lane), the effects were great. The scene with superman fighting in downtown smallville was tits. The action was well staged. The look was right, the feel was right. Particular mention for Michael Shannon and the crazy bitch.

This movie is hated too much. Again, I liked it better than the avengers (which is a nonsensical borefest)

Things I liked:
* Great cast. No real holes there except for the minor characters of Steve Lombard and Pete Ross.
* Best Lois outside of the comics and animation.
* Oil rig scene. THAT is Superman coming of age.

Things I disliked:
* Overuse of Jor-el (That goes back to Brando)
* Misuse and underuse of Pa Kent (Again, goes back to Brando being the main draw for his Superman movie and their inventing the idea that Jor-el is the father figure that pushes Clark to become Superman)
* Grey and dingy visuals. The movie doesn't have to be in vibrant color, but the entire movie had a dull film over it.
* Darkening the costume. Not sure why Captain America and Iron Man can get away with color in their costumes but Superman had to be muted down to dull and dark tones.

This is me as well. I don't hate it, but I didn't think it was very good. And I have lots of problems with it.

It was definitely one of the most disappointing superhero movies ever for me.

Not a big Superman fan in general but I thought it was a fun movie.

Like so many Zac Snyder movies, it lacked a soul. It may as well have been a Michael Bay movie. I actually got bored because I wasn't invested in it. Action is a good thing in a superhero movie. Too much action is not.

Bottom line: the movie was long on fights and short on substance, and it suffered as a result.

Christopher Reeve killed his Zod, too.

At least Henry Cavill had the decency to act all broken up about it afterward; CR was enjoying it in Superman II.

It was the complete opposite of fun. It was a great action flick but a terrible Superman movie. The only decent casting in that abortion was Michael Shannon and Kevin Costner. I'm sorry but thousands of people should not be dying in a superman movie.

I didn't know people hated it. I enjoyed it and it had great action scenes. I also saw it in IMAX 3D though

Things I hated:

Lois Lane becomes a bad arse. The historically clueless human, wages war on Zods shipmates, killing more of them than Supe did

Jor el being able to communicate with Lois. Wtf? The fact that he didnt know she even existed when he launched baby Supe (or what country he would crash land in), the obvious language barrier, and also somehow magically detecting that she was a human that Supe could trust?

The hypocrisy in letting Pa Kent die, but needing to snap Zods neck to save a nameless family, after seeing millions of other nameless people killed. Some by Supes own actions. Not to mention that with all the powers Zod had, he was just going to sit there and get snapped

How it took years for Supe to masters his powers, but Zods group was fully functioning in days.

Do you really have fun watching te old Superman movies? Have you seen one in a while? They are campy and goofy but does that make it fun to watch?

Pa Kent was my biggest problem from every angle. Even his "let them die" BS.

That is like a parent telling their kid not to use their talents in life.

I had no problem with Lois but anyone was better than Kate Bosworth and statutory rapist Superman from Returns. a 21 year old actress with a 5 year old son. The math doesn't add up Superman!
