2017/2018 was a huge year. Until 2022 though, while some absolute bangers in those years, there was less fanfare maybe? Then 2022 and on we've had some really strong movies that also had really good hype around them.

It has been an absolutely great run of horror/thrillers though over that time period. I think to the point though it probably seems like the last 1-2 years has seemed like there is more probably is because they've been a bit more advertised now as they are becoming more popular, Even if the quality hasn't necessarily changed.

Historically, while having a lower ceiling, horror films tend to be less expensive to make and market. If the budget is kept reasonable, the general horror audience might be smaller, but they are relatively loyal and are willing to get the big screen experience. So, good returns are expected.

Generally, most of the positives of the action film genre, but action films have become, let's face it, prohibitively expensive of late, raising risk and limiting upside on all but the top films.

Horror also is a genre that benefits probalby the most from seeing in theaters, with sound quality and things like that. So, even for people that rarely go to movies, lots usually make exceptions for horror for that reason. Which, to your point, adds to the ease of them having successful box office numbers.

It's probably why drama and comedy are destined for a future primarily in streaming.

A comedy or drama film is largely the same at home or big screen. Epics, Fantasy, Horror, Action/War, Space Opera, etc., benefit more greatly from a big screen/big sound environment.

The cinemas may not survive with a decreasing share of a product declining in appeal (and outright quality, if we're being totally honest).

That new Final Destination movie was this. It was horrible, but whatever tangential relationship to horror it had was all in jump scares and CGI gore

Smile (2022) is one of the worst offenders.
