It is probably a top 50 film of all time. There isn’t much it doesn’t do really well, and many things flawlessly.

It’s more of a meditation on war, man,and nature than a traditional plot .

This! The pacing in TRL is absolutely amazing.

But time has exposed it as a pretty conflated jumble of characters and messages that don't all fully develop or make a lot of sense as a whole.

The plot of the film was really basic, but the need to show various things and send various messages kind of overwhelmed what is a beautiful, but ultimately a movie that failed to live up to its extraordinary potential. The opening scene carries the entire reputation of the film, despite its beautiful flaws.

The Thin Red Line is a more brutal, direct film - it fits more the expectations of fans of Band of Brothers (which was made largely by the SPR team, by the way) - itself a more sincere, logical story, since it was based heavily upon a true one with many of the participants' input.

For my money, The Longest Day is a better movie, start to finish, top to bottom. SPR is gutwrenching, but sends all the wrong messages about war (particularly that war), and ultimately doesn't make a lot of sense.

Half the movie is a monologue to God.

I literally did, then woke up to see a baby bird flopping around so I turned it off.

About 15 years later I tried it again and liked it better and could see what the director was getting at. But Malik is never going to be one of my favorites and I have no desire to see it again.

Hated it

Beautifully shot but overall boring without a coherent plot.

This was the worst movie I have ever seen in a movie theater. Maybe you need to be stoned to appreciate it, but it was so slow and dragged on and on. It was beautifully shot, I'll give it that. But just an awful experience. Only other movie that comes close to it was the Fountain. My parents actually walked out, went shopping and came back to get me, cause I fell asleep during the movie..

The scene in Saving Private Ryan where where Mat Damon describes him and his brothers having sex w/ the ugly girl is cringe worthy. The last stand scene at the end is also pretty unbelievable.

Sounds like you just have bad taste in film. It's fine. We can't all be intelligent.

If you haven't listened to the Melanesian songs sung in pidgin English you are missing out. They are haunting and beautiful. Youtube link

But I really didn't like this movie. I've tried to watch it multiple times, but always wind up bored.

Its Malick's best film with Badlands a close second. His films aren't for the masses.

I remember renting it on VHS right when it came out. Saw SPR in the theater where it got a standing ovation in the theater. I fell asleep 3 times trying to watch it and I still have no idea what the hell it was about. It's a top 3 worst movie for me. I put Dunkirk in the same category... but that's another thread.

You're right. They're for the critics and pretentious arthouse filmgoers who think they see something in his films. In actual reality, however, there isn't anything there at all.

It's an existential, contemplative, poetic/artsy style film with a very non-traditional story structure. Dialogue is generally minimal while the film relies on inner musings and somber music (Hans Zimmer's best work imo) to carry most of the film's mood. It's 3 hours long, generally slow paced, and isn't the war movie most people expect when going into it. It's not a "fun" movie to watch.

That being said, if I had to pick a single favorite movie, The Thin Red Line is probably it. In an age where they make 10 Fast and the Furious and Transformers movies and every one of them is a commercial success, I wouldn't expect The Thin Red Line to be anything other than shitted on by general audiences, but I do understand that it's not everyone's cup of tea.

This might have already been stated, but for me, it came out too close to Saving Private Ryan and I wasn't prepared for what that was.

Also, I saw a late showing, wasn't feeling well, and had to catch a flight early the next morning. I wasn't set up to enjoy that movie at all.

Also, I was on a big Clooney fix at the time and couldn't get over him getting billing like he did and being in only one scene at the end.

Yet it’s on many of us old southern redneck baws list of top films. How does that happen ? How are we simultaneously low- brow and “ pretentious arthouse filmgoers “.

Maybe, it’s just a polarizing film and if you “ get it” you “ get it” . I absolutely love it . I can think of few films I love more . It’s gorgeous, well acted , beautifully shot, etc. The problem - is if I tell you why, you’ll insult me . Very weird that people not only hate the film but hate the people who love it . It’s like a country music guy railing against opera or vice versa. If it speaks to you - it speaks to you . That’s the beautiful thing about art . You get yours and I get mine.

It was a bloated mess where the film maker's hubris overflows. Let's not even get into the voice overs, which were probably used in an attempt to convey some of the internal monologues in the book. That being said, a lot of the scenes are great and many of the actors outstanding. The movie as a whole was iffy.
