I never really cared for any of the characters except Phoebe, so I never really liked the show. It's not terrible, just kind of boring to me. Hokey, cheesy comedy has never been my thing though.

oh goodness, I'm the exact opposite. I like pretty much all the characters except phoebe. The humor of her character (not blaming lisa kudrow for this since it's not her fault) was awful.

I'd like to know how many of the friends haters watched on the original run and their age at the time. I'll certainly agree a lot of it (especially early seasons) definitely feels dated, it was absolutley a product of the 90s. I still think it holds up though. It's not the best sitcom ever but it had everythign I'd want in an enjoyable comedy show.

Friends Seasons 1-4 or 5 is probably the most natural comedy I've seen outside of maybe early Cheers or The Cosby Show. While Seinfeld, P&R the Office, Arrested Development or IASIP are super funny, their brand of humor is often absurd and/or completely unrealistic.

I'm 31 and didn't watch the original run. I caught a few episodes in college and a few times since and always thought it was terrible.

I did. I was in college for most of its run. I wasn't a regular watcher though. My roommate and a couple of girls I dated liked it, so I watched a lot of episodes with them if I happened to be around when it came on.

That brand of humor is definitely more in my wheelhouse, and all of those shows are among my favorites.

A lot of the early seasons of IASIP are fairly realistic.

It's a great hangout show. Cheers is better, but it's the same concept, you just like hanging out with the characters even when nothing is happening. It's comfort food. It's engaging while at the same time not demanding much of you, which was perfect for it's era of TV, and something shows really don't know how to do now. Everything seems to demand my full attention so I can follow the the A-B-C plots as well as the season long arcs... which is great for dramas and such, but for a sitcom? Come on, I just want something passive I can click on and relax to. Too many shows are requiring too much work.

And I like shows that require engagement and work. But not EVERY show. I need a break. And Friends' low stakes is really its best asset on top of an attractive, likeable cast.

Top 5 Mainstream Sitcom IMO

Cheers, Fraiser, Seinfeld, Friends, and The Office are the best sitcoms for me

Because it is. Geez. It has a likeable cast, and is a fun, lighthearted show. You can just sit down and watch it. And it has rewatchability.

Ding ding ding.

Everyone is trying to create the Office and/or "subversive, unexpected comedy," so every show ends up feeling the same.

We've lost the simple art of

quote:

you just like hanging out with the characters even when nothing is happening.

Which was how comedies were for a long time. And it's fine to change, but we don't do hangouts well anymore.

Then our opinions may just be too different to adequately communicate. That's fine, but for the people who hate him his dumb face while he whined or begged and his annoying nasal tone was his character.

He lacked the sharper sarcasm of a Chandler or a more masculine strength of a Joey. He was just this plush ball of annoying weak begging and not doing the right thing

He was loathsome. Sometimes it was being an obsessive stalker with his girlfriend(s) or being too weak to stand up and do the obvious right thing with his fiance or with his parents (e.g. the emily storyline, the breaking off with rachel storyline, the sabotage's chandler's relationship with his parents storyline). He was just really never good or likable enough to overcome those terrible behaviors.

I understand all of your points but you're right, we are just at opposite ends of the spectrum to come to any sort of agreeance. Lots of the things you mention are so incredibly minor (his dumb face) and can be applied to probably thousands of other sitcom characters. You say he's "loathsome" and mention what I consider insignificant things like being weak or his voice but don't mention any of the other things. He's a good father, not only to emma but to ben as well. He was prepared to be emma's dad even before rachel decided to get back with him. He's been dumped on hundreds of times in many ways. Him and chandler are the only ones of the cast to hold a consistent, steady job throughout the series. And on and on. Again, I'm not saying he's an elite character or anythign, he's just a regular, normal, everyday guy in a sitcom. Certainly not worthy of "loathing".

In fairness to my point in the way I deliberately made the argument. I first admitted I find him unlikable and started out his mannerisms. Then I amplified to loathsome because of actual terrible behaviors.

He did some incredibly shitty things to people between the backstabbing, stalking, abuse of power as a professor etc. The annoying whining on top of that is the garnish

Ross is one of my least favorite characters on any TV show, across all genres. But I admittedly can't really say why. I just found him incredibly annoying.

It's one of the reasons I enjoy Parks & Rec and The Good Place. The characters seem to genuinely enjoy each other's company. The Good Place has some higher stakes, but it still manages to pull off the feel of a hang out show trapped in a high concept show.

All of this. Ross is one of my favorite characters. I don't see him as loathsome, though. He's good natured, is often a good friend (his backstabs are minor compared to the girls, and even Chandler). He has a long term job, is well intentioned, literally all of the time, but no matter his good wins, just isn't always put together. That's the humor. Flirting with the Pizza girl was a brilliant portrayal of his intentions ,mixed with his flawed execution even though he's put together.

Schwimmer also did physical comedy pretty well. Agree to disagree on some but I think he's the most well rounded outside of Chandler.
