Why do people say friends is a good show?

I don’t understand why it’s still culturally relevant 25 years later. Fraser and Seinfeld is light years better.

Same reason The Big Bang Theory and Two and Half Men were network tv powerhouses. All the 'tardeds

The same reason they think Jennifer Aniston is hot. They grew up with it.
One thing I've learned on this site -- you do not challenge nostalgia.

They grew up with it.

Because Rachel was very cold, in every single scene.

For a "mainstream" comedy it does everything well.
It's characterization is very clearcut and the cast was perfect. That's the main reason it took off.

It really isn't, but it's on Netflix and a lot of teens and 20-somethings who missed it the first time like to watch it. They aren't interested in Frasier or Seinfeld.

It most definitely is. They are having a huge pop up exhibit in NYC for the 25th anniversary.

“We have at least 400 tourists a day coming to look at that building. They take pictures all day and all night. I come outside and there’s 20 people hanging out on my stoop or taking a pee around the corner,” Rezar Skoda told the Post.
It is the most watched show on Netflix behind only The Office, and ahead by nearly double of Parks and Rec.

Jennifer Anniston isn’t attractive? That’s news to me.

Friends is a good show.
It’s for the audience that wants something less caustic than Seinfeld or The Office.

I watched it while in college because it was popular at the time. Ever since I discovered Seinfeld, Fraser, Cheers, Golden Girls, 3s company....yup, I then realized Friends suck.
It’s ridiculous how some defend the show with “oh oh oh, Jennifer Aniston hot!” Come on bro, it’s a comedy show. Being hot doesn’t make you funny. In fact it may have the opposite effect because it’s harder to make fun and laugh at yourselves. Look at the characters of Seinfeld, Fraser, Cheers. A bunch of mixed looking group. Look at the great comedians. If Chappelle looks like Tyson Beckford, would we take his funny hood stories seriously? What if Louis CK have Fabio face, would we laugh at his self deprecating jokes of being bad at sex?

No idea

But I never liked these two shows either.

It amazes me how butt hurt people get that others like something they don’t. People have different tastes, that shouldn’t bother you.

why does your alter arse keep starting stupid threads on multiple boards?

Friends is just good stupid fun. I have never seen an unfunny episode

Other than Ross, the characters are generally likeable. The female characters are attractive. The situational humor is often at least worth a chuckle. No "in your face" political commentary (although the lesbian wedding was a bit controversial in the 90s).
It's not cringe inducing comedy like The Office or Seinfeld.
Not super dark like Its Always Sunny or The League.
Easy to watch if you want to zone out. Good background show if you're working or playing on computer.
Its not like you have to follow a complicated plot or intricate humor.
Brainless light entertainment. It's Baywatch but with clothes, no action, and in quick half hour segments.
Also an easy compromise show to watch with SO. I'd prefer not watch Scandal or some such crap, she'd prefer not watch The Last Kingdom or a documentary about The Roman Empire. No one feels like putting an effort since we'll be sleeping within the hour anyway. "Hey, just put Friends on."

There is something to be said for a TV show like Friends that consistently delivers fairly funny episodes like you said.
Do they have the funniest episodes of all time? Not really. But the thing with shows that swing for the fences is you get a lot of strikeouts to go with the home runs. Friends just cheerfully bats in double after double after double.
You can kill 4 hours watching it and you probably won't find a bad episode. You might not find a great one either, but you will consistently find decent to very good ones.

First few seasons were pretty good. It got really bad when they made Ross retarded.

I once had the TV on mute with closed caption on. That was when I realized how unfunny the Friends scripts are. Props to the actors and laugh track operator for making people laugh at the terrible writing.
Sort of like watching The Three Stooges with the sound effects edited out. There are YouTube clips of it, and is amazing how bad it is without those wacky sounds.
