What do you compare the bond between Eragon and Saphira, and pretty much anything Saphira does to star wars?
R2-D2 for sure in the original. Gets a bit looser in Eldest though, but R2 is still hanging with Luke at that point.

If you want to just call it Star Wars with magic and dragons, that's fine, but it was cool when I read it in high school.
I agree. Didn't notice the Star Wars similarities when reading it through the first time (definitely noticed the Lord of the Rings and Pern references though), but did a double take when mid-way through the Eldest.
The thing is I don't think Polani knows why Star Wars worked. He's ripping off individual plot points rather than the structure and tone. If it had the same structure and tone, then it wouldn't have had 300 pages of filler.

Since you are so pissed that a fifteen year old essentially used Lucas' story from A New Hope, does it bother you also that.....
George Lucas essentially copied that same story with some tweaks from a 1958 Japanese Kurosawa film called A Hidden Fortress? And he copied more than just the story. He copied actual shots and how they were framed and filmed.
And he wasn't 15 when he did it.
There are no original ideas bro.
Paolini did a good job with those books. He is a good writer, he was just unoriginal.
Like 98% of all writers.

Because all the studios were already booked with other prequels/sequels/reboots/spinoffs.

Not bad for a 15 year old, but it should have never been published and he should have been told to go back to the drawing board and to write something more original.
Good point dude, one of the best selling YA novels of the decade should totes have been rejected; what shitty call on that editor's part.
You should open your own publishing house and only accept high art young adult literature, you'd make a killing.

I enjoyed the books. Movie sucked.

In school i liked the books although I've finished the last one. The movie was just bad on every level. They tried to condense the material into a shorter movie, to go along with
other mistakes.
other mistakes.

I kept on thinking throughout my read "Eragon better not be Morzan's son". And of course this turns out to be the case. I just didn't finish it once that revelation was made.
Read Further.

Yeah, I thought that was off. It's been awhile though.

Because Fragon would be a dumbass name for a movie.

Except he flew off to the East.

Spoiler...... he's not Morzan's son.

I find all of your comments interesting. I suspect I am a lot older than all of you. I as an adult read this series and enjoyed it. I find it ironic you mentioned Star Wars which Lucas himself has described as a Western movie set in space. Having read fans books for over 50 years, I can tell you that most have elements of other books or movies. If you read a book with Orcs in it, we'll according to your viewpoint it would be a ripoff. What about dragons. Penns dragons aren't the first. Had the script actually followed the book, it would have been more of a success. I see movies come out and people think them great success. In reality often they are word for word remakes of old movies made in the 30s or 40s. Originality is in the way a story unfolds and the characters it develops. If you are always comparing your fans books, you will find your favorite author will always win. Try to ready books with an open mind. You will enjoy them more

Yes it was.

was basically a word for word remake of A New Hope.
Which A New Hope was a remake of The Hidden Fortress. No originality anywhere.

This is where I stand on it. Started reading the first one when I was in 8th grade, and I can definitely point to this series for really sparking an interest in reading for me
The biggest mistake he made was basically making all the main characters gods by the end of the series. The magic system started off cool, but the eldinari absolutely destroyed it. Ending was a bit lackluster as well considering you see the main villain for like a chapter. Also the world was tiny. It’s hard to give a shite about the fate of the fictional world when it seems like there’s 1000 people in it.
