Why did the movie Get Out win so many awards for completely ripping off The Skeleton Key?

Not sure if this has been discussed here or not but I tried using the shitty search function and didn’t see anything.

I mean the entire plot is damn near exactly the same and Get Out fricking won best original screenplay, and is also scored a lot higher by virtually all critic sites :rotlmao:

Personally, I still enjoyed Get Out but it’s kinda ridiculous it got so much hype. Everyone involved in the skeleton key got shafted.

YouTube video that goes in depth on similarities

Because they added a racial and satirical component in a time when woke was very much in vogue.

I also really like Skeleton Key and feel that it is quite underrated.

I get that, I just don’t understand how the scores were so drastically different.

Rotten Tomatoes gave SK a 38% and GO a 98%. Insane

In all honesty, GO should be about 10 points lower and skeleton key about 40 points higher. I don’t understand why it’s rated so low while I understand exactly why Get Out is rated highly.

Huh? Not even close. Serpent and the Rainbow wasn't about switching bodies with a soul to keep living forever. Serpent and the Rainbow was basically a fake zombie movie and people being buried alive. That opening scene with the dude crying freaked me the hell out.

The Skeleton Key was 100 minutes of both horror and southern Gothic clichés. Sarsgaard was awful.

Reviewers found it two completely different movies all because of the message, which is sad because reviews should be about artistry and story alone.

From RT:

Skeleton Key:
"The Skeleton Key, a blundering New Orleans-set thriller under the spell of archaic stereotypes about Southern Bayou blacks."

Get Out:
"The film has clever ideas about literalizing black fear of the pathology of whiteness, but it doesn't go far enough in its indictment of white supremacy."

I mean, it was a legit movie and it did a good job explaining a social perspective through the genre.

If we are just weighing its artistic value and suspending our personal opinions on that actual topic, it was really well done.

To be fair, Peele's original title was "Skeleton Key 2: Nazi Boogaloo"
