but I definitely am not paying $17/ticket for any movie.

Whose charging 17 bucks a ticket?

I think all the theaters in Baton Rouge have updated to recliner seats and all that and it’s like 10.50 a ticket and an amc in Metairie I’ve been to was around 12

But yes, if you enjoyed going to the theater MoviePass is a no brainer

The cheapest theater anywhere in the New Orleans area was Canal Place at $15. All the others were $17.

No. This is not true. Canal Place is probably the most expensive theater in the New Orleans area.

ETA: Just looked it up. I can go see Ready Player One at the Palace Theater in Elmwood for $10.59 for an adult and $7.59 for a child right now. Show time is at 9:30.

The woman and I see movies a few times a year. Infinity War is coming up. Pretty big deal. Will pay $10 happily to see it.

I do. Sometimes go with one of my kids, mostly by myself though.

My wife and I have different tastes in movies, I like sci-fi, she likes tearjerkers.

Not many of those made

I rarely go to the movies, but I just went to see Ready Player One, will see Super Troopers 2 this weekend, and still plan on seeing Infinity War, Deadpool 2, and Solo. I usually only go on Saturday or Sunday afternoon, when tickets are about $7.

I refuse to see movies in 3D, though.

I’m usually the same way, but Ready Player One in 3D was pretty damn cool

Haven’t been in probably 4 years. I have zero interest in going to sit in a movie theater to watch a movie anymore

Some are MUCH better in 3D. Ready Player One is definitely one of them

I go once or twice a month. Taking the kids, getting drinks, snacks, etc. It is close to $100 now.

I'm fine with that occasionally, but I do wish they had a $5 theater, with maybe 1990's level sound and comfort, for "artsy" or comedy movies. The price of a ticket being what it is, I usually only go to see the movies that would look better in theater. Oscar Nom movies I never go see in theaters, they are fine at 60".

Then, on top of high prices, Fandango charges you $6 for "convenience".

When I lived in Nola we went to Canal Place regularly. It was like $17 per ticket. Always way more than AMC. I can’t believe AMC is that high now. Plus concessions were insanely high at Canal Place Bc they were artisanal or some shite. Couldn’t just get a normal hot dog and milk duds. But it was the premium we paid to avoid the trash at west bank palace.

Now that I live in the Houston suburbs, we have great options so we see more movies and the competition keeps tickets down, I guess.

Movie Tavern close by.

We have Alamo Drafthouse. If not for these, I'd be like the OP. At least a couple draft beers and actual food makes it much more enjoyable.

We have Alamo for food/drinks/fun vibe. Cinemark has nice seats. AMC also has nice seats and is cheapest. Regal is an adult playland with bowling, arcade, food, pool tables, bar. None are as expensive as canal place.

Actually it is true. When we went all the Palace theaters were $17/ticket. Canal Place was cheaper. During the process of this thread I have discovered that theaters are tiering their prices, so it appears they cheapen them not just by times and movie popularity but also apparently by how long it's been out.

To your point about Canal Place: it WAS the most expensive until Palace and Regal did their renovations. Now they are charging more (at least for RP1 when we went).

While I understand and actually like the tiered price system, it still doesn't lessen the burden of the exorbitant prices for movies now. We have already seen that 2017 was the worse year in 2 decades (I linked an article somewhere in this thread), and now that they are making it even more expensive to go it will continue to bleed.

Moviepass looks badass, but my only issue is that I can't get one to cover me and the family. I have to buy one account for each of us in order to work, which is a bit burdensome. Still it does seem to be worth it ultimately.

Tickets in the Dolby or IMAX auditoriums are $17 at night, all other regular shows are roughly $12 at night. Popularity and how long it's been out have nothing to do with it.

Also, most people have NO impluse control. They'll bitch and moan about popcorn & drink prices, then line their asses up to fork over for it. They can't tell their kids "NO", so they usually end up spending double the amount of the tickets for food. If people realized they could make it 2-3 hours without popcorn/soda, only then would the theatres react and lower prices. Hell, theatres could double the prices tomorrow and people would bitch up a storm, while waiting in line to pay. And it's not just popcorn, with the new menus at AMC, I've seen people walk in the theatre at 9:30am and immediately order a pizza & fries.... even McDonald's even has the decency not to serve fries until 10:30.
