Who still goes to the movies?

Last week we went to go see Ready Player One, and this is the first time I have gone to the movies in quite some time. My main reason is due to cost ($10-$12/ticket is obnoxious), but time has been a hindrance as well. Plus I have a nice home entertainment setup, so missing out at the theater is not as bad as it once was.
I was stunned when I saw the prices now. The cheapest theater anywhere in the New Orleans area was Canal Place at $15. All the others were $17. For my wife, daughter and I to go see this (canal was out due to their age restrictions), just to sit in the seat was $50.
I understand the business model here. They have remodeled their theaters to be more comfortable, and as such they have less seats to fill per screen. The problem with this is that they are pricing the average consumer out of the marketplace. It's outrageous that there's no standard movie theater to go to now where I can just sit down in a normal seat and watch a movie at a reasonable price. What's sad is that I am now referring to $10-$12 as reasonable.
At what point will the breaking point hit and people stop going? I think we've seen enough evidence of this over the last few years, but they skew they numbers by reporting total revenue income. Those numbers don't reflect the number of people going, because they constant rising prices make up for the fewer viewers.
I get the feeling they know their audience now is comprised of either die-hard fans or wealthy who think nothing of spending this, so they are refining their theaters to attract those wealthy people by implementing reclining leather chairs and such. This is unfortunate, because movie lovers like me are now relegated to waiting until it's on video.
We are reaching the point where the movie experience is no longer an option for the average citizen. Actually I think we are already there. It's very sad.

Going Saturday night. Date with the wife. Movie Tavern close by. Have some food, a few drinks and watch Quiet Place. She is wanting to go see it.
I would bet we go to the movies about 6 or 8 times per year on average

I think the last movie I saw in the theatre was American Sniper. It's just so much easier and cheaper to rent a movie through the cable box. I should make it a point to see movies like Interstellar on the big screen though

I agree, and I think this is why there has been a massive increase of quality on television services. Netflix and Amazon have produced outstanding movies and shows to go along with broadcast and cable productions doing the same. People appear to be turning away from the big screen due to the high costs, and home entertainment is targeting them.
I reserved my theater experiences for big production films that I wanted to see, but it's at the point now where I don't think even those are worth it. We are approaching $20/ticket, and that's crazy. I predict we will be there in 2 years if that long

I've been going more lately, but I only go for matinee showings on the weekend or for $5 Tuesday

I regret it every time. I have the type of hearing loss that makes candy wrappers and popcorn bag rustling louder than the movie, and there is no time when these fatties will not eat.

You’re clearly talking about AMC. They’ll rip your arm off and serve you a completely shitty product. Malco or Cinemark don’t charge that high.

AMC and Regal. Those are our only options in the NOLA area other than some specialty theaters. Covington has one left that's still normal prices, and apparently so does BR based on your post. Give it time though, because they all appear to be switching to this format

This appears to be the only options now. I haven't priced them yet, but I definitely am not paying $17/ticket for any movie. It's either matinee or video for me

Saw this in the other thread, and it sparked me to start this one. It does appear to be a fantastic product given the current state of the market.

If I go it's only because the movie deserves to be seen on the big screen.
Recently: Dunkirk.
Classics brought back: Lawrence of Arabia
I'm not going to the Cinema to watch found footage, comedies or horror. I don't need to see video quality on the big screen.
Dunkirk was insanely loud but it provided an experience I couldn't have gotten at home...it put you into the action instead of as just an observer.
That's the only reason for Cinema today...if a movie can immerse you...otherwise forget about it. Redbox, Netflix, Amazon.

It really is. Since I got it in October, I have averaged once a week, sometimes more and only pay $9.95 a month.
Certainly seen more movies than I would have otherwise, and have seen some in the theater that I wasn't sure about.
For sure worth the money.

Alamo Draft House in Austin is . Really cool place, great food, and good place to catch a movie. Before I moved here I might have seen two movies a year. Now I see about one per month due to the better venue selection

I go a few times each year but I tend to make showtimes on a weekday afternoon when there's basically no one there.

I still love going to the movies, but what you're saying is correct. Prices are absurd. I know tons of people that don't go anymore because they refuse to pay those prices.

Yep. A day off. Double-header...find two movies you want to see back to back. Theater hop.

This is the movie board. Most people here probably go regularly. I go about 20 times a year. Can't remember the last time I paid more than $5.

I'm looking now, and it appears they have a tiered price system. 11am prices at AMC in metairie are $6, then they jump to $9 at the next showing at 1:45. Looks like my movie experience will be limited to the 11am times from here on out.
They have different pricing for Avengers though. 11am on opening Saturday is $11. So they do appear to have tiered pricing based on the movie itself. That's nuts
