Was one of those rare movies that there was a long arse line two weeks into its run.
Not really rare in the days before the multiplex. Even the worst films usually had pain in the arse lines.

The internet is great but there will never be a moment like that reveal ever again because of the 10,000,000,000 movie sites that have already read the script for most movies, 2 years before they come out.
don't read those sites and you'll be surprised

Awesome topic. I asked my dad this same question a couple months ago. He told me his buddy wouldn't stop talking about it so they finally saw it. The special effects were incredible.

Saw it in the theater when I was 8 yrs old. Loved it then and I love it now. My wife doesn't understand it, but every time I see any of the Star Wars movies I'm that 8 yr old kid again.

It came out when I was 16.
No one at my school could describe it intelligently. One girl thought that R2D2 was supposed to be a robotic dog. My older brother loved it and spoiled the ending for me (told me that the best scene was when Han Solo comes back to save Luke).
I saw it the first time and recognized it as a cross between comic books, serials, and the pulp stories of Edgar Rice Burroughs and his ilk. With the realism and depression that was 70's cinema, a lot of people had never experienced a big, fun, adventure movie.
It hit pop culture in a big way, the soundtrack and it's disco versions were all over the radio. A cheerleader at my school showed up to class wearing Princess Leia cinnamon buns and gave us all instant boners.
I saw it a second time at the drive-in, which was an experience in itself. (Gave it more of a 40's serial feel, up on a torn drive-in screen with John Williams' score coming out of a tiny window speaker.)
Empire came out when I was in college... a friend spoiled the Vader/Skywalker reveal for me.
It wasn't until Jedi that the whole Star Wars mania fully kicked in. I was amazed to see that people were lining up in costume (that was something reserved for Star Trek).

My dad says that he took me to see it when it first came out, but I do not remember it. I would have been 3 or so.

It was also kind of underground in that only young people were rushing to the theatre to see it.
Say what? It was the cover story of Time Magazine the week before release when being on the cover of Time Magazine meant everything! The lines at Lakeside Cinema were around the building opening night (I was there) and continued like that for months. It was a HUGE cultural phenomenon from Day 1.

I had just started college. Big impact on me? No, though I bought the soundtrack and enjoyed Meco's disco version. I have not seen any of the sequels or prequels.

saw it with the fam around age 5 or 6 at a drive-in theater. I don't remember it being SUCH a big deal then (I probably fell asleep in the car), but having the toys to play with later certainly made an impression and then the following movies were must-sees because of this. Starting out seeing the first one so young meant that Star Wars was a big defining part of my childhood. It would be strange for me to make a Star Wars reference to someone else around my age and for them not to "get it"--EVERYONE I knew had a Vader toy or a stormtrooper or a giant plastic AT-AT in their house. Now my kids whack each other with lightsabers on a daily basis. It's the cirlce of life...

I remember it well. I was 7 when I saw it for the first time. The whole phenomenon made a huge impression on me.
I guess the most important thing about it is that it was a rare movie that had a kind of evangelism about it. After you saw it... you had to seek out people who hadn't seen it yet, and take them to see it. You really felt the urge to get more people to see it.
I saw it at the Southland Mall in Houma, and if you wanted to see it... the lines were MASSIVE. I remember the lines going all the way down the corridor of the mall and then around the corner. It didn't matter whether it was day or night. The line was unlike anything I had seen before.

there was an older kid in my neighborhood who was old enough to ride his bike to the mall back then and he would come back adn "sell" star wars action figures still in the box for like 30% of the price at that time. none of us 6 year olds had any idea he was actually stealing them from Toys R us.

We had a guy on our street doing the same thing, but he was eventually caught and sent to Juvenille Hall for 2 months.

I don't remember the kid's name now as this was circa 1979 or 1980 but I'm certain he's in leavenworth or Huntsville at this point.

I grew up a Big SciFi fan. I was a senior in High School. Blew me away cause of the adventure of it along with the special effects. The special effects were great but still no better, or actually not as stunning as 2001 a Space Odyssey which came out almost a decade earlier.
