I'm talking the crazy ones that you had to pay to be a member of and they rented these giant tapes of movies as well as vhs. I forget what those giant sized vhs tapes were called.

We had one Monroe behind that creepy motel on Louisville and it was crazy. I think you had to pay like $15 as well s the $75 sign up fee to bring home a tape for a day or 2.

All tapes were in generic black containers and kept behind the counter.

Felt like cutting edge.. Must have been late 1970s..

I remember the Beta Max days. I was like 5 or 6. You had the option of VHS or the massive Beta Max tape that was the size of an encyclopedia.

I think VHS are the big ones - you're thinking of the (Sony) Beta versus VHS war?

Or perhaps 3/4", which were quite rare (mainly military data recorders and professional video cameras for many years)?

(The big one, back left.)

Yeah, commonly called 3/4" now - Sony had the high end market sewn up - VHS got them on wide availability, rather than quality.

Ironically, Sony took what they learned in winning the Blu-ray versus HD-DVD format war, only to find that plastic discs are obsolete.

I had ET and some He-Man cartoons on Betamax. That was awesome.

Too bad the porn industry decided to go with VHS.

I remember hearing about them when I was a kid but we couldn't afford membership or a VCR

Around that same time I remember seeing a videodisc (Spielberg's 1941) being played in a store -- totally blew my mind!

Holy crap I just remembered we rented the videotape player *and* the take at the same time.

I was wracking my brain there trying to remember how we could have afforded the player too..
