Hayden Fox. Guy won the National Championship at Minnesota State!

Even more impressive considering he started out coaching high school in Pennsylvania with midget arse Tom Cruise as his star player.

Locals ran him out of town after losing the homecoming.

G. D. Spraudlin. Good choice. Good actor. Hard not to see him pointing that bronze cannon on the desk at Michael in Godfather II.

I still gotta go with Coach Boone. Everyone has had one or two like him.

Kinda of a fraud in reality.Got fired a few years later because of a revolt by the players AND coaches.TC Williams also had a huge enrollment advantage over every school in their classification.

I know that. We were mostly seniors in 71 and copped a brief national mention when Williams was making noise.

Denzel was an idealized character and an amalgam of sorts. Nonetheless, there were coaches out there that were tough molders of young men who needed to be toughened up.

My most memorable was a Jr. High coach who survived being an Marine infantry sergeant in the Pacific. Guam and Iwo and was later a notable player at Arkansas State.

The water makes you weak schtick is vintage for his one liners and philosophical poetry. "If that's a stance, then I'm a (fill in profanity laced description)".
"Kissing is a contact sport, football is a hitting sport". If you're confused son, hit someone".
"Put a hat on him".
"Take that to the outside and it's a touchdown".
"Are you hurt? How do you know if are? Have you been hurt before? No? Then how do know you're hurt? Get up then".

I heard they were basically an
Alexandria all star team from the 3 schools that merged and the other teams in their region were told they were gonna form 2 separate
teams but that obviously didn't happen.

Boone also made a damn good living on the speaking circuit after the movie. He kinda took over his movie personna which was obviously fiction for the most part.

Molly McGrath from Wildcats is a good one. She started with zero respect from an inner city high school team that only won one game the previous year (because the other team’s bus broke down) and led them to a championship. She was tough and didn’t take any of their shite. The run in the rain is a good scene.

I had a JV coach who was bat-shite crazy.Took over for the HC who moved up to varsity in the middle of season.Practices went from a little over an hour to
2 1/2 hours with repeated Oklahoma drills and full contact scrimmages.BTW,he wasn't your typical PE teacher/coach.He taught AP math and advanced calculus...still a strange dude with a big chip on his shoulder.

Well, years later he was arrested for the murder of his wife but acquitted.I have no doubt in my mind what he did but was obviously too smart to get caught.

I had to laugh at that. A thoroughly dangerous man. As he later appeared to prove.

Our guy was that 2 hour kind of guy from the git go. 7:00 am until 9:30 or 10:00 and back at 3:00 to 5:00 or 6:00 during August two a days-included Saturdays. Not a lot of progressive medical thinking there. They were very big on keeping us hydrated but also plied us with salt pills. He started out my last year there with about 30 guys coming out and ended up when classes started with 17 remaining. 12 started games obviously playing both ways, coaches alternating ends to run in plays to us.

As the attrition wore on, players got put where they were needed, not where they had usually played or in positions they were familiar with. I started out a wing back, then full back, then quarter back and finally an offensive and defensive tackle. 5'8". 140 lbs.

At a combined Parish sports banquet another team's coach said he had 6 running backs he could play and not one of them was under 160 lbs.

He was a short Asian guy with very thick glasses. If he served in the Pacific it sure as hell wasn't on our side.

We were undefeated at the time and promptly lost 2 games in row...the team was in full scale revolt and the old HC was sent back down to coach...one of the happiest days of my 9th grade year.
