Gene Wilder was an a list movie star.

MIchael Richards only succeeded at one character.

For slap stick, physical comedy and peculiar behavior and delivery, Michael Richards is hard to beat. He is the main reason Seinfeld had it's success. I don't know if Elaine and George could've carried they show without Kosmo.

I never looked at Gene Wilder as a physical comedian, at least onscreen. But maybe I'm missing some performances.

Obviously Jim Carey has to be up there as an all time physical comedy great.

Matthew Rhys has been doing some work this season on Widow’s Bay with his physical comedy (in the midst of the horror).

You make a fair point that is based on movie success. In that absolutely Wilder was better. But I read the question as best physical comedian and not most successful.
To your point, it is strange that Richards didn't see movie success knowing how beloved he was by Seinfeld fans.

Gene Wilder was a bull riding sumbitch in Stir Crazy. But I would go with Kramer on this one.
