What’s your favorite “secondary” fight scene in LOTR?

Helm’s Deep, Siege of Gondor/Pelennor and Battle of the Morannon are out. But there are several amazing secondary battles in LOTR that I love. I guess you could call these skirmishes.

Balin’s Tomb
Amon Hen
Wargs vs Rohirrim
Gondor vs Haradrim in Ithilian
Ents attacking Isengard
Orcs storm the beaches of Osgiliath
Faramir’s retreat from Osgiliath

I think when you crank the surround sound up to 100 on Balin’s tomb encounter it’s almost up there with best overall fight scene for me. The first cave troll, the first overall fight in the trilogy, the first time seeing orcs attack our heroes, the tension and build up, it’s absolutely top notch.

I think second for me is Faramir’s retreat from Osgiliath. For 2003, to see Fell Beasts swooping down and picking up horses to drop them on high was just unbelievable to watch. It was such a step up in CGI at the time. I was like a kid in the candy store watching it in the theater.

Amon Hen takes third because of the first time seeing how much of a bad arse Aragorn is. He went 1 on 100 with ease, then Legolas shooting automatic arrows at amazing speed. Boromir’s final stand always gets me too.

Im not great with the terms and location, but when those trees fricked up the orcs and captured saruman in the tower when they broke the dam and flooded the land. That scene was bad fricking arse.

Balins tomb is where shite started to get real in lotr. Blew my mind when I saw it for the first time. Then the balrog scene and Gandalf’s death was right after. It is probably my favorite sequence in movie history. It had everything. And it was powerful.

This shite right here made my jaw drop:

The sword play by Aragorn vs Lurtz, the Uruk-Hai chief who killed Boromir was, epic. When he deflected that dagger with his sword, that wasn't CG. He really did do that, and they kept it in the movie.

Viggo Mortensen is the GOAT

Balin's Tomb is the easy answer here.

That level was the demo for the hack and slash Two Towers PS2 game. I vividly remember thinking how badass that game was gonna be after playing it.

I think this is my answer as well... in 2001 I was like 12 and didnt really know much about LOTR.

the battle and the buildup and the drums and the sound and at that moment I finally realized the stakes and what bad shite was out there in Middle Earth

Weathertop is freaking awesome because of the foreboding music playing while the Hobbits are being cornered by the Ringwraiths.

It was a real fricking knife too. They had fricked up and not given the guy the prop knife for the throw.

I’m going to quibble...

Isn’t that almost Gymkata pommel horse though? 1 against 200? What are those orcs just standing around for?

It’s too much overkill. It would have been much better and more believable if it was something along the line of 1 against 5.

Thanksgiving tradition for me to watch these.

Can’t wait to wake up from post lunch nap, heat up some leftovers and get the marathon started

I agree.

I hate when they show like 100+ for dramatic effect then have him fight off dozens.

Just show the dozens and show him win. I’m not retarded

BUT it doesn’t take away from the epic ness of the scene

Great scene. Think about how great a movie is to feature walking talking fighting trees battling monsters and taking down a tower without looking cheesy or stupid.

Don’t know why but that moment, where Aragorn seems to give a salute or something, has always stuck in my mind as among my favorites.

Keep in mind, those Uruk-Hai are less than a week old going up against the greatest human threat to Sauron in all of middle earth. There was no greater swordsman than Aragorn. He was raised by Elves, specifically Elrond, he’s a Numenorean, he’s been a ranger in the wilds for 70 yrs honing his skills. It’s perfectly believable that Aragorn could hold off that many until Legolas and Gimli arrived 2 minutes later.
