It's a complicated show and it being in German doesn't help matters. I had to watch it with English closed captions AND English V/O dubs on.

The first few episodes are going to be a bit of a slog as you get introduced not only to all the characters (and there are many) but behaviors and a culture different from that of the US (to varying extents). But once you get to the part where you believe you know what's going on...

...you realize you don't know shite.

It has probably the best ending of any scifi series I can think of. Everything is tied up by the end of the series (and that's saying a lot).

Well damn, guess I'm gonna push through it then. I think the fact that the audio is dubbed kinda irritates me. But too many positive comments to not try to push through it.

As others mentioned, don't use the English dub, just use English subtitles.

Also, if you ever get confused while watching the show, this website can help immensely: https://dark.netflix.io/en

The best part is that it's a spoiler-free website. What I mean by that is that you click which season you're on and through which episode you have watched, and it won't spoil anything past that point in the show.

So if you've watched the first 5 episodes of S1, this is what your selection would look like before clicking "Continue":

As noted, you better by God pay attention while watching it.

It is damned good.

1899 is solid as well - only 1 season though.

Wife and I watched and we thought they did an excellent job of keeping you knowing who was who. Not sure if this is classified as sort of Sci fi, but if so, we are not Sci fi people and we absolutely loved it

Yeah, slow burn, but it got super interesting towards the end. Another good show that was cancelled too soon by a streaming service. Hopefully someone else picks it up. Outer Range is another one

It was good for awhile then it got overly confusing. Stopped watching when it got super convoluted

Have to get to season 3 and through season 3 to understand. Study up on the Schrodinger Paradox to make sense of season 3 and the show. It is used to understand the two Martha's and two Jonas's. It also explains why they don't know each other in the start of season 3 when they grew up together in a different reality. Ending is pretty emotional.

As others said, watch it with English subs instead. I'll also agree with others that it's one of the best series I've ever watched. But you have to pay attention throughout, definitely can't be half watching. And I'd probably warching all the way through, stopping partially through would probably make you lose the thread.
