We did 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s some time ago. All those threads are archived though.

Would love to update them, but it's super time consuming to do.

Princess bride is a good choice

Another strong contender is Back to the Future

I thought of Back to the Future because it too is an all-around movie that everyone can enjoy.

But I think Princess edges it. It just has everything, comedy, drama, action, romance.

As Peter Faulk's character explains when the grandson asks if it has any sports in it:

Grandpa: Are you kidding? Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles...

The Grandson: Doesn't sound too bad. I'll try to stay awake.

But what takes it over the top is the pace. There's no dry spells, the editing is great, it doesn't linger in certain scenes, even at the beginning, the scenes to show Wesley's love for the Princess are very brief as the Grandson intejects after only a few scenes of as you wish "wait, is this a kissing book?"

Today I looked online to see what lists were out there and rankings from movie magazines and found this:

Parade Magazine has it #1 of the 80's.

quote:

The funniest fantasy-adventure film ever made, The Princess Bride is magic in every sense: it’s enjoyable for all ages, endlessly rewatchable, as romantic as a fairytale and as quotable as Casablanca. Every person in the cast seems like they were born to play their role and every joke lands. It’s that rare, inconceivable thing: a perfect movie.

Basically echoing my sentiment.

Ranker community had it #6.

It seems the vote on here was #8.

It just seemed to me this is a movie that everyone loves yet doesn't really talk about like they do Raiders or Empire or ET or Back to the Future.

Some really great movies, but no mention of This is Spinal Tap.

Great movie that some metal bands took offense to because it hit so close to home.

First question you should ask:
What movies did Scorcese and Kubrick release in that decade?

The Shining
Full Metal Jacket
Raging Bull
The King of Comedy
After Hours
The Color of Money
The Last Temptation of Christ

There you go.

The Color Purple was the 80s best movie

I'm a 70s/80s kid but I think the 90s have a very good argument for GOAT movie decade.

BTTF has all this, and executed better IMO than Princess Bride but not by much.

I watched PB first with my kids during quarantine, and just finished the BTTF trilogy tonight. From 6-11 year olds perspective BTTF wins handily, but they sure enjoyed PB as well, just not near as much

Whereas both films execute said themes really well, I feel PB meanders a bit at parts.

BTTF part 1 is super tight and the pacing is just perfect.
