But I think Princess edges it. It just has everything, comedy, drama, action, romance. As Peter Faulk's character explains when the grandson asks if it has any sports in it:

I read the book once, long after seeing the movie.

I found it interesting that the book ALSO had the grandfather/grandson characters, and is describing the grandfather reading his grandson a book - that wasn't a device added for the movie.

Here is the top 10

1. Empire Strikes Back/ ROTJ
2. Breakfast Club, The
3. Raiders of the Lost Ark / Indiana Jones
4. Back to the Future
5. Die Hard
6. Goonies, The
7. E.T.
8. Princess Bride, The
9. Terminator, The
10. Ferris Bueller's Day Off

Damn, what a great decade.

Hard to argue with anything there, but I think I’d probably sub Top Gun over Terminator because I’d have T2 in the 90s, and also sub Karate Kid over Ferris Bueller because Hughes is already on the list with Breakfast Club.

Star Wars always feels more 70s to me since the trilogy started in the 70s.

If I could move that to the 70s I’d maybe bump Ghostbusters or Coming to America into the extra spot.

Would love to see all of those decade lists

The 80s is only eclipsed by the 70s, as far as quality, but I think the 80s had so much quantity, it was staggering looking back.

The decade basically perfected the popcorn movie that was also extremely well written and acted.

Most of the huge hits were also original ideas.

Ghostbusters, Top Gun, Back to The Future, Raiders, E.T., Goonies, Beverly Hills Cop, Predator, Die Hard, The Terminator, The Abyss, Karate Kid, Blade, Robocop, Etc. etc. etc....all totally original, non sequel concepts.
