I think the superhero bubble is about to burst

This was said after the success of The Dark Knight. I don't think they're going away any time soon. I never thought that Iron Man 3 would break box office records, especially given some of the fatigue caused by The Avengers and Downy Jr.

These movies aren't high art, some are just marginally wittier popcorn entertainment but they still attract more talent than a video game property does/will. It's simple - they have well-known, widely recognizable archetypes. Most stories in games have been told ad nauseum and it's usually the gameplay and interactivity that elevates it; I think that's a reason a solid filmmaker sees it futile to adapt a video game. The results of adapting a game along with its mechanics are clear, and studios see them as nothing more than a recognizable name that could be turned into a movie for a quick buck, i, e., Resident Evil. Universal killed Verbinski's BioShock adaptation because of the failure of Watchmen - a big budget piece of fiction that flopped at the box office. The very small community of studios still don't trust the medium as a real conduit for telling quality stories by respected filmmakers.

Who said this? It had barely just started. Really the suoerhero phenomena started around 2004 or so, and most these fads only last for around a decade. I see a time soon when people get sick of the superheroes, just like everything else.

It's been said before TDK, when the fad started. Mostly by snarky, pseudo intellectual snobs that look down at comics as a medium. I don't think many saw it as the phenomena that it is now and continues to be.

I like them, but I'll tell you what's going to kill the superhero films (with the possible exception of Batman): reboots. They'll continue to make trilogies, and they'll give us the same shite we've had before. People will get sick of it after a while and will know everything walking into it. The only superhero who I think can overcome this is Batman since I think they're going to take that franchise in the direction of the Bond movies.

What is the point of giving everything a sequel, or even stretching movies out into trilogies.

I liked Thor, and I thought it worked well into setting up The Avengers. However, what is the point of making another Thor movie if they are going to also make another Avengers?

Furthermore, what was the point of making a third Iron Man? I know it ultimately comes down to making more money, but I just don't understand where it fits into the overall story of the world they built. Perhaps I'll have to watch the new Iron Man to understand, but for some reason I kind of doubt it.

Spiderman, the Fantastic Four, Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, and Daredevil, they're already implementing their reboots. Once this Avengers franchise is done in say 7 years, expect it with them as well.

My prediction is that the superhero killer will actually be Avengers 2. Too many characters since they are adding a couple more. Its gonna cost a shitload to make. I just don't see it playing out well.

I really don't understand the reboots of the very recent movies. They remade the hulk to add the cut scene about shield at the end, but then they had a third actor play Dr. Banner in the Avengers. Sure the second movie was better, but it seemed unnecessary. I honestly didn't think they really needed to try and make an obvious tie in.

The Tobey Maguire Spider Man, while a bit weak, still did really well at the box office. While I like the newest one, it just seems a bit silly to remake them so closely together.

On the other hand, I like what Nolan did with the Batman franchise. The Tim Burton movies were campy, and sort of played homage to the Adam West version. Nolan grounded the movie in something that felt real, and it brought a darkness to the they psyche of Bruce Wayne.

Once again, I know it is obviously about money, but I feel like they could ultimately play out these characters by bringing the movies back so quickly.

In terms of video game movies, the movie that has a chance to start the domino effect for studios (both game and movie) greenlighting the games that we most want to see made into movies is 2015's Warcraft directed by Sam Raimi.

Imagine for a second these films:

Metal Gear...directed by Christopher Nolan
Starcraft...directed by James Cameron
Assassin's Creed...directed by Gore Verbinski
Uncharted...directed by Joss Whedon
Diablo...directed by Peter Jackson
Mortal Kombat...directed by Kevin Tancharoen (this one is actually happening)
Mass Effect...directed by anyone but Michael Bay

Watching this right now. It isn't terrible, but I wouldn't really call it a true Halo movie.

Possibly, but MGS is the video gaming definition of jumping the MFing shark.

Starcraft...directed by James Cameron
Unless it was done via animation, I don't see it working out too well.

Uncharted...directed by Joss Whedon
That game was already pretty much a movie.

Diablo...directed by Peter Jackson
Same as Starcraft.

Mortal Kombat...directed by Kevin Tancharoen (this one is actually happening)
I hope this one is more gritty than the original movies. The source info is really good.

Maybe, but who would be willing to make a movie when you know the audience is going to want to lynch you at the end of the trilogy?

There hasn't been a single good video game movie.

False. The first Mortal Kombat movie and Prince of Persia were both legit. Doom sucked as whole, but that scene where they went First Person Mode was awesome.

For me, the only games that have the story to become great movies are ones that are great themselves. However, if the story is great in the game, it's usually a long one and trying to condense it down to ~120 minutes with a bare bones story just doesn't seem worth it.

I wouldn't mind a God of War movie that filled in some of the blanks of Kratos's life, but it seems the studio is doing that via their games.

Watch "rebirth" and "legacy" for Tancharoen's take on Mortal Kombat.

Sony Sets a Release Date for Resident Evil 6

Are you ready for another Resident Evil film? If you saw Resident Evil: Retribution - the fifth chapter in the series, which grossed $221 million worldwide - you know they've left the door open to at least one more chapter in the series.

When we spoke to director Paul W.S. Anderson prior to the start of Resident Evil: Afterlife (part four) he told us he had mapped out a story for a new trilogy which would carry the franchise into a sixth film, so you know he's ready. While we don't have a title for that sixth film, there is a confirmed release date...

ShockTillYouDrop.com has learned Sony/Screen Gems has set a debut date for September 12, 2014 which means Anderson and star Milla Jovovich will likely begin shooting the new film this fall.

Story-wise, no details have been released, but when we last saw Jovovich's Alice, she was at the White House and facing a rather large threat with Wesker by her side.

We'll have more details as they come in!
