Gus McRae.

But he also played Lucky Ned Pepper in "True Grit" (the original). Limited screen time, but very well done.

As mentioned, he's superb in everything. I agree with the Lonesome Dove, Open Range, Godfather nominations.

Not saying it's the best, but throwing this out there for fans who may have not seen it due to limited theater distribution. It's a loosely "based on true story" movie.

Get Low

This was another of his later, less known movies. Only knew of it via redbox. But he makes anything he's in, worth watching.

Augustus McCrae, Lonesome Dove.

I named my dog Gus after that character.

Tom wasn't a wartime consigliere.

The Apostle and his bit part in Breakin 2 The Electric Boogaloo are his best work.

He's always been good at playing dirtbags. Max Mercy from The Natural and Ned Pepper are prime examples, but I think his real masterpiece is Frank Burns.

The Great Santini is the answer.

I know several kids named Augustus, after Gus in Lonesome Dove. None named Santini.

And no one has mentioned his supporting role in Falling Down.

Too many to count, but I love Tender Mercies.

"I used to be."
