I think a big difference is you got to binge the season in a few days. Most of us had to wait a week between each episode and especially the first half is slow setting up things. I didn't start watching until after season 4 and looking back I think it really changed how I view seasons 1-4 compared to 5-7. Watching 1-4 within weeks was a big difference than years for 5-7. Also after you catch up you should watch some videos that break down episodes/seasons you learn a lot that you missed and themes.

BTW if you liked season 5 you're going to lose your mind over season 6.

I think this makes all the difference in the world, particularly for certain shows like GOT. If you're watching it week to week, it can be infuriating to see the story move along so slowly or in such dissappointing directions. If you're binging, you can just jump to the next episode until you feel satisfied. There is some good stuff in season 5, but you have to slog through a lot of crap to get to it and turn your brain off more often than should be required.

I watched it week-to-week, but i dont think binging would've saved the poor writing

I don't have the same hate for season 5 that most of this board does. Dorne is my only major gripe.

Season 7 is actually my least favorite.

season 5 in general was when the writers started making more head scratching / wtf and annoying little plotholes or decisions started creeping up.

Season 7 is probably my least favorite as well but season 5 is when i started to notice it I think.

Still a good show and I am excited for the final season but it didn't quite deliver the way it did early on.

I don't think it saves it but I think it could soften the blow for some. Regardless, I've still been overall dissappointed with the show since they've passed up the books, but there is still good stuff occasionally. I'll see it to its end at this point.

Season 5 is in the mid 90’s on rotten tomatoes and won a dozen Emmys. It’s my least favorite season, but don’t think a few posters on message boards waxing poetic about how bad the show has gotten speak for the majority of viewers.

Also, season 6 is outstanding and has three of my favorite episodes of the series. The finale is my favorite episode of TV of all time.

This is how I feel, too.

Hoping season 8 can recapture some of that magic

To be fair, Dorne in the books is boring as hell. Even more boring than the Kingsmoot.

Wonder what the OP’s thoughts on S6 will be if he thought S5 was great . FWIW I love S6. Night and day compared to S5 in terms of quality.
