GQ just did a really good profile on him to answer that question. It's a little long, but it's well worth the read:

LINK

quote:

His eyes are pale and a bit watery these days—less wide than they used to be when he was new to the screen, playing guys who were often new to the world. Blue-gray stubble around the once mighty chin, gray long-sleeve shirt draped indifferently over the once mighty body. I'm 35: There was a time when the sight of Fraser was as familiar to me as the furniture in my parents' house. He was in Encino Man and School Ties in 1992, Airheads in 1994, George of the Jungle in 1997, The Mummy in 1999. If you watched movies at the end of the previous century, you watched Brendan Fraser. And though his run as a leading man in studio films lasted to the end of this past decade, he's been missing, or at least somewhere off in the margins, for some time now. He was there on the poster, year after year, and then he wasn't, and it took him turning up in a supporting part in the third season of a premium-cable show, The Affair, for many of us to even realize that he'd been gone.

One poster makes a great point: why doesn’t Brendan Fraser have a sitcom? Hell, there’s a perfect premise for him and his career: former A-Lister who hasn’t gotten a gig in years moves back to his home town. Hilarity ensues. I think that would fricking sell. Pretty much live action Bojack Horseman and far less depressing.

Episodes did this with Matt Leblanc, although it was set in Hollywood. Extremely funny show and it’s on Netflix.

I read that earlier. Depressing. I'd feel bad for him, but he had a better career than a lot of folks. Hopefully he banked some of his money, so he's not sweating where the next pay check is coming from.

Also, he got butt hurt because he wasn't in a Brett Ratner version of Superman. Someone tell him he dodged a bullet, because on paper it sounds like shite.

If Netflix can make "The Ranch" happen, I'm sure they can make this happen. Hell, I bet Pauly Shore would even guest star for the free lunch.

I feel like we talk more about Brendan Fraser here than anyone outside of DDL and Idris Elba

Maybe so since the JGL hype train derailed a few years ago.

apparently, someone grabbed his junk at a party years ago and the poor man didn't have it in him to neck punch the bastard right then and there ... so he's spent years recovering ...

A terrific article about a good dude who has had a rough decade. He just seems lonely. That comment about "I think of them as friends but we haven't spoken in years" was heartbreaking.

In George of the Jungle, he wore a loincloth for most of the movie; his muscles had muscles: “I look at myself then and I just see a walking steak.” The film eventually grossed $175 million. “The naïf cum babe in the woods cum new guy in town cum man-boy cum…visitor-in-an-unusual-environment conceit was, uh…was very, very good to me,”

Obsessed with cum.

He's got a house and farm in Bedford, NY, which is one of the nicest parts of Westchester County. He can't be too broke. Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones also live in that area.

I have always pictured him to be a bit like his character from "Blast from the Past": eager to have everyone like him and kind of naive about how the world really works. I thought that before I read this interview and now I really think that.
