Sad news, but he definitely left his mark on horror:

Nightmare on Elm St.
Last House on the Left
The Hills Have Eyes
People Under the Stairs
Scream

We will never be forgotten, which will make his death okay. RIP Wes

This sucks. Guy was a huge inspiration to me writing short horror stories when I was a kid. Plus Scream is my favorite movie of all time

IMO, Craven is right up there with Hitchcock
I wouldn't go that far, but he was good.

I grew up watching up horror movies and The Serpent and the Rainbow is the only one that ever actually scared me. I still think its one of his more underrated movies.

I think that's my favorite of his. And that's bizarre because it's basically a schlocky desecration of an incredible non-fiction book that at one point Peter Weir (The Truman Show, Master and Commander) was going to direct.

But taken on its own merits, it's an excellent horror movie with creative ideas and classic moments. "I wanna hear you scream!" Bill Pullman gets his scrotum impaled in that film. There aren't many directors who have that on their resume.

Also even though it's got a lot of wonky stuff in it, I've always preferred "New Nightmare" to "Scream," and it remained my favorite meta-horror until "The Cabin in the Woods."

He'll always be legendary for "A Nightmare on Elm Street."

People Under the Stairs

My parents let me watch this when I was very young, like 7 or 8, and this movie absolutely terrified me. I didn't want to go to my grandma's house because she had a stairway.

One of the all-time great genre directors, and a true advocate for the genre. He was one of the few directors who argued that horror was a legit genre capable of true art.

Also, to irritate a certain segment of this board, he always argued that films should advocate a viewpoint and that social commentary was a necessary part of horror (it also is how one could smuggle politics into film under the disrespected genre label).

He was a generous man and a sharp thinker. He cared deeply about the medium and though he hadn't made a film in some time, he will be missed. I'm going to watch Shocker this evening in his honor.

Genre has been serving this function for a long, long time.

When asked if there were any franchises that Tarantino would actually want to direct, he replied with this BOMB.

“I could have imagined doing the first ‘Scream.’ The Weinsteins were trying to get Robert Rodriguez to do it. I don’t even think they thought I would be interested.

“I actually didn’t care for Wes Craven’s direction of it. I thought he was the iron chain attached to its ankle that kept it earthbound and stopped it from going to the moon.”
