Good number, domestically, for LM.
International number is very low, especially in Asia.
That's a bad number for Fast X, domestically.

Thirty five years after the animated story of Ariel, a flame-haired siren of the sea who falls for a prince, charmed audiences, a live-action remake of “The Little Mermaid” dominated the Memorial Day weekend box office. The Disney release is on track to debut to a massive $118 million over the four-day holiday, with $96 million of that coming over the weekend. It ranks as the fifth highest Memorial Day opening in history.
All that watery magic didn’t come cheap. “The Little Mermaid” has a $250 million production budget, so it will need to keep attracting crowds around the globe in order to break even.

Elsewhere in the multiplexes, “Fast X,” the tenth installment in the “Fast and Furious” franchise, continued to show signs of running low on fumes, at least in the U.S. It’s estimated to bring in about $23 million his weekend and $28.7 million over the four-day holiday after launching to a soft $67 million. Stateside the film has generated a disappointing $113.6 million. But Dom and his road crew are getting a much warmer reception overseas, with “Fast X” expected to cross the $500 million mark at the global box office this weekend, making it the third-highest grosser of the year. But it needs to keep making money and lots of it. The latest chapter in the series cost a knee-weakening $340 million to produce.
Disney’s “Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3” took third place with $20 million and an estimated $25.3 million for the four-day holiday, pushing its domestic total to a sizable $300 million. Universal and Illumination’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” came in fourth with $6.3 million over the weekend and an estimated $8.3 million during the holiday period. Domestically, the movie has made a gargantuan $560.9 million after eight weeks in theaters. A sequel to the video game adaptation can’t come soon enough for theater owners.

Cinema insults the intelligence of the audience.
"Little Mermaid 2023"
"Fast X"
"Mario and Guardians"
Remember when you could go to a movie and not know anyone's character on the screen..and you had no idea about the story you were being told?

I love that they are predicting the four day weekend totaled literally halfway through the four days.

That’s how they’ve always done it, and the predictions are usually spot on or very close.

Oh I know. I get it.
It’s just funny to me that articles on Saturday night/Sunday morning are talking about what happened for the four day weekend which doesn’t end until two full days away.

It's almost assured that Mermaid's second weekend is going to be a hollow shell (pun intended) of its opening weekend.

If Guardians is at $300 after this weekend, it's going to be a flop. I don't see it having any kinds of legs long term.

Will the Little Mermaid make the $750 Million it needs to be profitable?
Next week will have compete with The SpiderVerse, then will have to go against the Elementals, The Flash, and Transformers.
Unless the international numbers jump dramatically in a hurry, I don't think it breaks even.

I don't believe it gets anywhere near that number. 600 mil would be a win at this point, IMHO.

Well, I will wait a couple of weekends. I don’t want to take a seat from people, IYKYK.

I am confused as to why you think $118 million is a good starting number for the Little Mermaid.
There were 4 tentpoles that revived Disney animation and set the company's dominance over the last 35 years: Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and Lion King. These are considered Disney animation's modern classics.
The box office for each live action reboot:
Beauty and the Beast (2017) - $504 million domestic ($1.26 billion global)
Aladdin (2019) - $355 million domestic ($1.05 billion global)
Lion King (2019) - $543 million domestic ($1.66 billion global)
A few days ago box office projections had LM at $140 million for the 4 day period. Now that has dropped to $118 million? They better hope actuals come in much higher. That is an awful result.
Will it even make $300 million domestic? Yikes. It should have done better than Aladdin at least. It is far more iconic than that film.
Also note it cost $250 million to make. To turn a profit it must make at least $500 million.
And lets hope Disney doesn't try again to say "Its still COVID's fault. Family Audiences aren't ready to come back to theaters."
Because a certain plumber has disproven that theory:
Super Mario Bros (2023) - $560 million domestic ($1.27 global). And it is still making money as I type this.
Disney is out of excuses.

Wokecasting seems to be indulged/tolerated/celebrated in the US but seems to hurt box-office outside the US.

It's going to take closer to $700- 750 million to turn a profit.
If it only grosses $300 million, it's not just a flop, it's an epic disaster.
I kinda want to see it happen, not gonna lie

Could be that high. I know studios do their best to hide taking a loss.
If you actually go see it then please be careful. Fights breaking out are being reported. Go to OT for more details.
