I got the impression she was just a witch using children to stay alive. Saying the parents has consumption hinted she was much older than she appeared.

I immediately thought of the entity from The Outsider. Really was kind of a Stephen King villain, feeding off of others to stay alive or stay powerful.

I enjoyed the movie. We went and saw it last night.

The wife and I saw it about a week ago and we enjoyed it also. I like how it portrayed each characters interpretation differently from the same scene. Creepy as hell too.

It really does a good job showing how people jump to bad conclusions when we're suffering.

Finally watched this last night after intentionally staying in the dark about it after seeing the first trailer and hearing the hype and it was.....pretty meh. The movie was average, like a 5.5-6 but as a horror movie it was like a 2/10. To best summarize it, it was sold as being scary with a great ending and failed at either.

The big problem is that it devolved into horror-comedy nonsense, which is fine if the movie is supposed to be a horror comedy (like, say, a Ready or Not, which was fun and is what it was supposed to be). This movie was a bait and switch, which I had worries about from the literal go (with the shitty and unnecessary narration that in a more serious movie would have been done within the story itself). People kept raving about the ending, but to me the ending showed Cregger fell into the trap most modern horror movie directors do and didn't know how to end it. So instead of ham-fisting an ending he just chose absurdist comedy.

Horror comedy and campy horror are not real horror to me. They are inferior spinoff genres. There is an epidemic in modern "horror" of producing movies that are nowhere near scary and critics eat it up. This movie has moved to the pantheon of overrated modern horror movies adored by critics, just ahead of Sinners and just behind Get Out (although I may one day move it ahead of Get Out). Sinners had certain thematic/creative elements I thought didn't work, but it was a more well-produced movie that fully committed to horror, so it's a vastly superior horror movie than Weapons.

This wasn't a horror movie, just like how the Black Phone wasn't a horror movie (it was much more of a thriller with supernatural elements than horror). This was absurdist dark fantasy. There was only one scene that was "scary" (more creepy and tension-setting than outright scary), the scene with Justine in the car when the zombie-mom comes out of the house). This movie was like an R-rated, "monster of the week" episode of Supernatural.

The production was fine (a little bit bright cinematography, but when you realize it's not a horror movie that's fine) and the acting was obviously good. That's why as a movie it's fine. Nothing special, but not a bad movie. I won't likely watch it again, though, due to its failings as a horror movie. I can watch the Wailing or Hereditary or Kill List for an actual horror m masterpiece, and not this movie that's miles away from that status.

*ETA: the funniest joke in the movie likely went over most people's heads. The wife who came home early was played by June Diane Raphael (June from How Did This Get Made). The character she was married to in the movie was named.....Paul. Clearly an inside joke for old sketch comedy friends.

Honestly where a lot of horror movies go wrong are when they feel the need to over explain things

This movie is guilty of that. There is literal narration bookending the movie

I read this morning the end narration was ADDED after audience screenings, to over explain things.

The issue is that there is a lot of nonsensical stuff you just have to not think about to make it work. Movie logic stuff. That's an entirely different discussion than use/delivery of exposition/explanation.

This movie has issues with both over-explaining and nonsensical plot aspects that you just have to not think about too much.

Ignoring the nitpicky stuff (like dumbest police/town on earth), just revisit the opening narration.

quote:

This is a true story. It happened right here in my town two years ago. A lot of people die in a lot of really weird ways in this story, but you’re not gonna find it in the news or anywhere like that because the police and the top people in this town were like so embarrassed that they weren’t able to solve it, that they covered everything all up. But if you come here and ask anyone, they’ll all tell you the same thing that I’m gonna tell you now. This story starts in my school. Maybrook Elementary is kindergarten through fifth grade. So this one Wednesday is like a normal day for the whole school, and they had this teacher who was new. Her name was Justine Gandy, and on this day, she was going to her classroom just like every morning. But today was different. Today, none of her kids were there. Every other class at that school had all their kids. Even the other third grade Mrs. Belt taught was full. But Mrs. Gandy’s room was totally empty. Well.. Not totally. There was one boy there, and his name was Alex Lily, and he was the only kid in the class of eighteen that came to school that day. And do you know why? He was the only one there, because the night before, at 2:17 in the morning, every other kid woke up, got out of bed, walked downstairs, open the front door, walked across the front yard and into the dark. And they never. Came. Back.

You're supposed to forget this by the end b/c it makes no sense.

Definitely should have changed the last sentence to "And they Came. Back. Retarded"

I admit I had to look this up. I knew there was an homage to Trevor Moore but am nowhere close to a WKUK expert.

I was wanting a chapter to happen on Gladys. See how she got into withcraft.

Guessing she has cancer or some other terminal illbess and resorted to learn witchcraft when modern treatments failed to cure her.

She used people's life force or something to keep herself alive.

That was my guess. Id like to see her backstory. An aunt that's into witchcraft. Guess she never talked about it at family reunions..

That’s my guess. Brolin was only under for a few minutes. Probably could have saved Han Solo and junkie kid too.

I thought Alex could've dropped the thorn stuck into water to break the soell he had on the children. He was controlling all the kids last with his spell to attack Gladys. Seems if he dropped his stick in water, they maybe would've snapped out of it.

they're entirely too good at making trailers. After Weapons, 28 Years Later, and Longlegs I am finished ?

Horror buddy of mine said to skip 28 Years Later. Said it wasn't very good.

I'd give it a 80-85/100. Worth seeing but had a ton of potential and didn't really deliver.

Yeah, it did. I think the comedy in the movie threw people off.

Am I mistaken or was Brolin's son the bully?

I think. Why did they write it that way? Can you figure out a reason for making his son a bully?

It really doesn't play into the story other than making Alex maybe more willing to screw over his classmates when Gladys asks him to.

The most divisive movie of the year. I thought it was miles better than 28 Weeks and one of my favorites of 2025. Some people said the ending is a cliffhanger, but we get the sequel in 3 weeks.

This is free on Netflix and worth watching, even if you end up hating it.

Kids are terrible human beings without being raised properly, and even then they still end up as garbage many times.

How did all the kids and Alex's parents go to the bathroom? They were there for months.

They were fed soup everyday. They had to take a dump sometime...
