Yeah, a lot of mixed reviews so far. I'm cautiously optimistic, but I'm prepared to be disappointed
Just don't go in expecting one of the best horror movies you've seen. It's not that. It's a perfect above average horror movie that hits on the usual notes and sprinkles in some new.

8/10.
Wasn’t really scary, probably biggest jump scare was when the red haired lady came out of nowhere a couple times.
Really enjoyed the ending.

I’m pretty sure that was to symbolize that the kids where turned into weapons at 2:17am.
But that’s not really what happened. Gladys summoned the kids at 2:17 AM but they went straight to the basement of Alex’s house. She didn’t weaponize them like she did the principal, the druggie, and Alex’s parents. Alex is the one who truly turned the kids into weapons when he used the spell against his aunt. Also, why didn’t the kids run with their arms out when they were chasing Gladys?

Alex control vs Gladys control

Just finished watching it. I enjoyed it! A pleasant surprise. I saw a lot of people online who didn't care for the overlapping, but I thought it was pretty cool how they all intertwined. I give it a thumbs up. Didn't think it was the least bit scary, though.
As far as Gladys, pretty sure she fed off of others' health. She thought she could feed off of Alex's parents, but when that didn't work she decided to use the children instead.
I agree that it didn't make sense that the kids were still entranced and unable to speak, yet Brolin's character was just fine. I also agree that the ending was too abrupt.
I liked it much more than Sinners and Together.

My biggest hurdle from reality was the cops were absolutely atrocious. So many things pointed to Alexs house. A fricking creepy arse old lady suddenly there. The dad suddenly having a “stroke”. Meeting the cops with holes all over his face. And they never talked to the mom? The kid takes home all of the name tags before it happened and nobody thought that was weird? I know they wouldn’t expect a witch, but you’re noticing something was wrong with that kid and that lady. But things like that are not uncommon in movies like this. Cops are often the dummies. It didn’t bother me because it’s a horror comedy (although subtle comedy) and it delivers in both those areas.

yeah I almost included that in my post - those cops were useless.
Also when Alex returned to the classroom and stole all the tags and the teacher came in... how didn't she immediately notice that all the tags were missing?

I really thought they were going the route of bullied kid kills class plot and thank god they didn’t because the internet would have not shut up about it lol.
This was a simple story really, told in an interesting way. With some really funny and scary horror elements. It’s actually a very fun movie which I was not expecting.

Am I mistaken or was Brolin's son the bully?

Just a thought I had while watching the movie yesterday. I got the impression the aunt was very old, keeping herself alive with her witchcraft. Also using the term consumption. But that wouldn’t make a ton of sense I guess. Surely her sister, Alex’s mom, would know if her sister was a hundred year old witch right?
I like the story being told from difference perspectives. Zach Cregger seems to be a pretty damn good director. He was apparently a sketch comedy writer before getting into directing.
I thought it was an entertaining movie. Probably a little overhyped. Hopefully Peele didn’t really fire people for not getting the rights. Would be a pretty big dick move

WKUK was like the Chappelle show for kids who grew up on the internet and were suspicious of 9/11 before it was mainstream

Really liked this movie. Very funny, some great jump scares and tension, and loved the Ferris Bueller ending
Based on the reactions in this thread- Y’all gotta stop stepping on the rake and doing the whole “overhyped” bit for every movie that comes out. Just watch the movie and focus on how YOU feel about it. Such a tiresome conversation to see about every single new movie that does nothing to actually engage with the movie or actually critique it in any way.
Anyway-
I really dug the way they laid out the story, not sure if the Magnolia similarities were intentional or not, but if I were to describe this movie it would be that it’s Magnolia but as a horror rather than a drama.
The theater was in stitches for the junkies scenes, Brolins reaction after his dream, the cop girlfriend beating up the main character in the liquor store and a few other parts. I’m glad they didn’t go full clown with the old lady but gave her enough clown features to make it unique without going over a common horror trope. Creggers has the sauce as a director, saw he got a lot of help in post production from David Fincher, and I think you can see that imprint in some places in the visuals

I don't think they were sisters. I'm thinking that it was a great aunt, considering they hadn't seen her in 15 years. It's also possible that Gladys has no relationship to the Lilly family at all, and is just a very old witch that probably goes from place to place attaching herself to families and draining their essence.

Maybe, but this film has been talked up quite a bit. Lots of hyperbole around it, starting with reports of a bidding war. The point is, those things bring with them unrealistic expectations that do the film no favors.

I’m fine with the hype because it’s great for horror. The hype sells tickets and gets people interested. This one will do very well because it’s actually good and people will have fun. It’s a great horror date movie unlike Longlegs.

Who cares, they are marketing the film. Your opinion doesn’t need to weighed against the opinion of others all the time. Y’all stop yourself from just enjoying a film bc you’re level setting some expectation going into it. Leave it at the door

That’s great to see. Warner Bros has had a great year so far.
