I remember being freaked out and always looking for parachuters outside my elementary school windows.

That is pretty much a nightmare scenario looking back at it. Especially since almost all older elementary, middle and high schools back then had one entire wall made up pretty much entirely of windows like that high school did. I remember that scene of the paratroopers shooting up the windows of the school being on the TV commercials for the film before it was released.

What ever happened to the Family Action Adventure movie genre?

Iron Eagle
Red Dawn
Wargames
Flight of the Navigator

There were some enjoyable movies from that genre back then.

Wrinkle in Time?
Ready Player One?

Shazam is looking like an old-school kids and one adult hero kind of movie.

I liked how they skipped trying to explain how the kids got so good with grenades, RPG's, mounted machine guns etc.... Nobody wants to watch them train and shite.

It was the 80s - they could have had a 3 to 5 minute training montage with a Survivor song playing in the background. However, I agree with you that it was unnecessary and probably would have disrupted the flow and pacing.

John Milius don't play, y'all.

And it kind of is that, except I didn't realize how freaking dark it is, they show them mass murdering civilians constantly, including all of their parents, nukes were dropped on major cities, characters are constantly dying.

I mean damn they even kill one of their own for betraying them, before the final battle when they essentially are ALL killed, all while upbeat action music is being played

Welcome to the 80's, where the specter of nuclear war still existed. We had drills. Duck and cover. shite wasn't lollypops and everyone-wins-trophies.

We got locked outside on weekends and during the summer. Even when it rained. And no one called the children's welfare service.

Playing war outside was a thing. BB guns, sticks and rocks were our weapons. We jumped out of barns, swung on rope swings, and jumped into farm ponds and creeks. All in preparation for the Russian invasion.

WOLVERINES!

One thing the remake did better was have them invade a west coast city and not some random town in Colorado
they didn't just invade some random town in Colorado. Watch again, Listen and pay close attention.

I love how you old guys seem to think the 80’s has a monopoly on children playing fake war games outside all day

Well, in fairness, if he had watched Buck Rogers, he would have also had a thing for Erin Gray along with Jennifer Grey.

Well, today you get arrested for pointing a finger at someone so it is a little harder to play war as a kid today.

And it's a shame.

Back in my day, my group of friends and I ran around the school playground with sticks (yes, safety patrol - STICKS), shooting at commies, gooks, and krauts, depending on what war we wanted to fight that day.

And the teachers didn't give a shite as long as an artery wasn't cut or a bone broken (broken fingers were acceptable).
