The agony in his voice and etched across his face when he delivered that line is soul crushing. Say what you want about Penn, but he is one hell of an actor.

Another good role for him was in the movie "State Of Grace" where he plays the undercover cop infiltrating the Irish mob of his former neighborhood where many of his friends are involved in organized crime.

Which one? "Mystic River" or "State Of Grace?

Love the casting in both movies to be honest, but I believe "State Of Grace" had a bit better cast with Ed Harris, Robin Wright, John Turturo and Gary Oldman----who's character was off the charts insane. Then the Italian mob guys with all the familiar faces from so many mob movies over the years.

I just saw it for the first time about a year ago, barely even deciding to check it out only because I saw it was an Eastwood film, and damn what a great one. I'm kind of glad I saw it when I did, while I don't have kids yet, cause it was a gut punch.

I usually can't stand Penn or his outspokenness outside of his films, but he deserved every award he received from that movie. The scene where he is being held back by police at the crime scene, up through when he finds out the truth may be one of the most impressive displays of range ever. It was so intense and authentic that it even brought out a roller coaster of the same feels in me.

The entire cast is just phenomenal, too. Hell, they even landed Fishburne during his Matrix prime for just a supporting role. About the movie having some epic lines, this is definitely true. Not many can have that kind of dialogue in a film that can strike chords with so many different people. For some reason this line has stuck with me:

"They never lose that tension, it settles in their shoulders."
"He lost his daughter. That's what's in his shoulders." "No, that's in his stomach. The tension in his shoulders, that's prison."

Sean Penn put on an acting clinic in that movie. Now that I have a daughter, it's hard for me to watch it.

I read this when I was 12 or 13 and was super excited when I saw they were making it into a movie. Saw the movie in theatres and remembering being extremely impressed with the adaptation.

Just watched it this afternoon on Netflix. Those last six minutes with the confrontation on the street and then the parade. All the characters facing off. Incredible how it played out. Wish I had watched this when it first came out.
