I remember going to see Lost World when I was 9 years old in 1997 on Memorial Day and not really caring too much for it. I liked Jurassic Park a lot and like every kid in the 90s, had tons of Jurassic Park merchandise and toys.

I saw that it was on TV last night, and figured maybe I didn't like it 24 years ago since I was too young to really understand what was going on, so I gave it a watch.

What a steaming pile of shite that movie is. I feel like it was a sequel that was forced because the Jurassic Park brand was so popular at the time and they had to capitalize on it so they lazily threw together a sequel knowing people would go see it.

I had to force myself to finish the movie - I wanted to stop watching since I had lost all interest but I stuck it out.

One of my favorite parts of Jurassic Park were the scenes that made you think, the scenes where it talked about the how, such as with the lab, hatchery, and the DNA explanations. And Jeff Goldblum's character really being the best of the bunch and his approach to the park adding a lot of value. It was still an action movie but it had a lot of material out there for the science nerds.

Lost World was simply an dumbed down action movie. Most of the scenes existed to be action scenes, no scenes that made you think. Malcolm's daughter was a completely worthless character(I cringed as hard as I did in Last Jedi when Leia force resurrected herself back to the ship when she did the gymnastics bar routine to knock out the raptor), and Malcolm's character was wasted in this movie as he existed to play the role of Captain Save a Ho instead of the intellectual contrarian he was in the first movie.

Horrible movie and it makes sense why I didn't like it in 1997.

They did. Crichton only wrote the book because they wanted a movie sequel. He had never written a sequel to one of his novels and was hesitant to do so, but they twisted his arm.

He died in the original book. That’s what Hollywood does when they have to write a script themselves.

ETA: wow just looked it up and they actually brought him back to life in the book ‘The Lost World’ by saying his death was labeled as pre-mature. What a bunch of bullshite.

I know it's not great cinema or anything, but I really like tLW:JP for whatever reasons (read: dinosaurs). Yes, there are a lot of stupid parts, but I take them in stride for the most part. As much as the cliff/trailers scene and the gymnastics/raptor scenes bother me, they're whatever. It's the mainland scenes that do actually bother me the most. I hated that it tried to be King Kong. That was its biggest mistake IMO.

But all in all, it was a decent sequel, and I enjoy it because dinosaurs.

If I remember correctly Chrichton didn’t write as fast as the studio liked so once the book name was decided the studio put together their own story and went with it. The JP sequel Chrichton wrote was pretty good and would’ve made a great movie sequel

His chameleon dino that was deadly and near invisible was awesome. They resurrected that idea for the Jurassic World film.

and then Spielberg proceeded to throw out most of the book and pretty much just made his own (vastly inferior) thing.

Agree that this is where the movie completely falls apart.

That was also part of what made the T-Rex coming to America so pointless. It gets to land and.... eats one dog and a poor SOB who was probably returning a movie to Blockbuster so he could avoid late fees.

Spielberg justified it by saying he wanted to direct a dino rampaging through a city but I've always thought then WHY didn't he really have the thing rampage through the city?

He really needed a spot to put the Asians running, thinking they were being chased by Godzilla, so he filmed that whole sequence in LA for that.

I’m one of the few who like TLW: JP. The gymnastics routine to kill the raptor was incredibly stupid as was much of the mainland, yes I agree they needed to base it more on the book.

Also the guy who gets eaten by the male rex in San Diego is David Koepp, he was the writer for the movie alongside Crichton although I think Koepp had more control over the movie script.

One thing I didn't understand is why did their have to be a 2nd island? Why couldn't they just go back to Isla Nublar from the first movie? Were there not dinosaurs still roaming that island?

If I wrote the script I would have focused on the safari game hunter's character more. I thought that was an interesting arc that was completely wasted. Maybe the island being abandoned and people charging money on the black market to access it for hunting, and the people who hunt there disappear to never be found again so the focus is on a hunter who can actually escape the island alive.

Jurassic World isn’t great. But that makes me appreciate the new dino a bit more.

I believe in the books the original island/park is destroyed. Of course it is not in the movie, but I guess thats why they went to a new island in the second movie.
