Great film.
As you get older you come to realize that as nasty as he is, in many ways, Nicholson's character is right.
But generally speaking, a movie that brings in moral quandaries and ambiguity.
The marines on trial are good guys. Cruise and Moore's characters are good guys.
Yet, in the bigger scheme of things, Nicholson's bad guy is better for the greater good.

Great film.

Is it me, or do they seriously not make movies like this anymore?

Everything is either an art house/independent type movie, comic based or action flick.

I thought it was great...I liked how they avoided the cliche of having Demi and Tom hook up...

To the earlier post, Nicholson never says “kangaroo” when admonishing the judges handling of his court room

That's not really an official Motto, is it?

Semper Fidelis (Always Faithful) is the Marine Corps motto.

Jessup was a fricking idiot for worrying about some nobody who didn't even want to be in the service

This is one of the indicators that Aaron Sorkin, who originally wrote the stage play, never spent a day in the service. Truth be told, he didn’t really even research it all that well.

Coffee has saved more lives and turned more piss-ants into fire-breathing warriors than any other chemical in the Armed Forces son!

Now Caffey may have weakened a nation but in return he gave us THE greatest courtroom movie since 12 Angry Men.

And the final scene had black and white 1940's flick written all over it and was an outstanding touch to the ending IMHO.

(Even if the flick was mainly about a bunch of "crayon-eaters"

I'm not really sure how many Marines are stationed in Gitmo, but you would think it being led by an O-6 indicates a sizable command. There is absolutely no reason for a full bird colonel to be interested in the behavior of an E-1 unless he was getting NJPed. The matter of Santiago most likely wouldn't have gotten above the platoon level in an actual situation involving a code red.

I mentioned this earlier, but you have to remember Santiago wasn’t just being disciplined for being a shitty marine, or because “he couldn’t run very fast”.

He broke chain of command and was writing letters asking for a transfer to senior officers, congressmen, and even media at one point saying he had information about violations going on if I remember correctly.

This wasn’t some run of the mill Code Red when Jessup got involved. Him being a rat was actually why they bound and gagged him the way they did, literally shutting him up.

Remember, the montage of Santiago failing at his drills was a voice over of his pleas in his various letters to whoever would listen.

I’m not saying that would absolutely get a commanding officer like Jessup involved, but it at least makes it plausible to set the stage for the story.
