The story and characters though, it just didn't feel that exciting or important considering the subject matter. Even when Blake died, it was sad, but not that sad, it didn't feel that intense to me.
I felt the same way, but.........

Obviously it was beautifully shot, the set pieces were incredible, the costumes, gear, vehicles, trenches etc.... were all so perfectly done
This is why I watched it.
If I want a good story there are little scores of war movies to choose from.

I watched in a theater and thought added a lot to it. I felt like the overall sense of adrenaline being a constant but also spiking at times was done well. It seemed to give a good feel for what it was like to fight in a war during those times.
I agree with this. I loved it in the theater. The way it's shot really adds to the experience if you see it on the big screen.
In terms of plot and character, I thought the movie made a conscious choice to to have a straightforward, propulsive storyline. The result is you don't get a complicated plot or a lot of scenes to develop characters on their own vs just seeing them in action.
That didn't bother me much. It seemed like the thrust was to immerse the viewer like they were the third person on the journey. You get to see people flash in and out, but never really see them further or get closure.
It wasn't lazy with plot or characters, IMO, it's that the movie put those aspects secondary to what it was trying do with the viewer.

incredible editing to make it look like one seamless shot.
I see a lot of people say this, but it is supposed to be two continuous shots. There is a hard break and passage of time right in the middle, when Schofield is knocked unconscious.
The story and characters are weak, but I knew that going in. I thought the movie was stunning, and appreciate it for what it is.

I saw in theaters and thought it was just ok. Kind of like a hot blonde bimbo. Beautiful to look at, but not much going on besides that.
Just not a very riveting tale that i felt engaged in. It wanted to be a journey/quest film, but that only really works when you have characters you care about like Lord of the Rings.
