White/black differences, Jewish relations, snipers, cat juggling… He hates these cans!

All I know is I finally watched citizen Kane and I’m confused as to why it’s considered the greatest movie ever.

It’s extremely difficult for someone who doesn’t understand filmmaking to put it in proper context.
Citizen Kane invented modern filmmaking in many ways. A lot of the things we take for granted now had literally never been done in a major motion picture yet. Non-linear story telling. Tracking shots. Among many other things.
The reason why it’s considered “the greatest film” is because it single handidly changed filmmaking forever.

Orson Welles was the greatest filmmaker of our time, period.

Not that this is the reason behind that situation, but it is pretty profound how Welles wasn't at all hesitant about such a public thumb of the nose to one of the very top powerbrokers in the country at that time in WR Hearst, and that Welles was able to pull it off in style.....pretty damn strong. Back in those days there wouldn't have been a whole lot of protection from retaliation by someone as powerful as Hearst. So OW nutted up on that one.
And IMO it is a pretty damn good movie, but we have the handicap of having now experienced state of the art SFX and whatnot in modern day movies, so it is a bit difficult to compare. I guess one must go on subject matter of the picture itself, and then get into a bit of a mindset of considering only the obstacles and difficulties of that exact time period, then comsider how it stacked up against the other big movies of its time.
I really don't know what I'm talking about. I do feel better about the 1st paragraph than the 2nd tho.

Not the greatest movie, but Steve Martin was glorious

The Jerk and Blazing Saddles are 2 of the last films that let us laugh at our faults.

The Jerk is definitely one of my all time favorites. Gotta go with Rocky for the GOAT though.
