Good to great movie.

Surprised to have so much humor in it. Nice change.

Loved Steve Zahn's Bad Ape.

Not a fan of throwing away the Nova name like that. She's too important a character in the novel and the original films to just toss her name to a random character.

They threw in Cornelius so who cares? She's just a predecessor and a reference to the fans.

It makes sense for a name like Cornelius to be handed down through generations of intelligent apes. Giving the name to a mute girl who will be the ancestor of animalistic humans who do not even use names makes no sense.

It's just a reference to the old movies. Who knows if they'll even make more movies after War.

Seriously? It's a profitable franchise.

of course since they are going the virus route, what happens to the astronauts when they return? They are not immune.

They've already stated that the virus is quickly mutating. As in the Andromeda Strain, (Spoiler/) it could mutate into a benign form (/Spoiler) after wiping out human intelligence.

I liked it.

Also perversely like how little discussion it prompts. It is what it is, and it did it well.

Only comments:

1) they really shouldn't have played up the Colonel's "appreciation of history." Once the nature of the virus was told, it was a little too obvious that his character would be infected as poetic justice. And audibly scoffed at when the girl dropped the doll, as it was obviously the vector.

2) thought it interesting the difference between his description of the virus's traits and what we see with Nova, rapidly learning sign language, and can read between the lines of her surroundings.

Is it a deeper look into his character, dismissing them as animals when they could not speak, and he viewed it as a threat to humanity that must be brutally suppressed? I like this idea because it makes the death wish all the richer, that he now knew that he murdered his son merely for not being able to speak, and that look of love was just that: not the gaze of a simpleton, but understanding of why and forgiveness.

But insane as the Colonel is, the second possibility is more likely to me: they obviously still have language faculties, they just can't speak. So why no "written" words to share their thoughts and show that they are still "in there."

Considering Nova's and the Colenel's nascent infections, it's reasonable to reconcile the stories by you will regress far further over time, language is only the first step.

Second possible explanation: the virus, along with eliminating language, does a clean sweep of memory and they start fresh. It would explain why Nova didn't seem to give much of a shite that her father was killed and she felt safe going with them, in contrast to the emotion shown elsewhere, and why the soldiers did not write. The Colonel however did not yet reach that stage.

3) Ceaser's character arc and struggles within both the movie and the series was excellent. Ditto for the exchange with "Donkey" which I thought was given proper attention without being hamfisted.

Its not Star Wars or based on a comic book so it won't get much discussion here but this was a great trilogy. Caesar is one of the best heroes of the last 10 years or so of movies. His story is better than any Marvel hero. One thing I really like about these movies that Transformers, Godzilla, and a few other recent movies have failed at is that the Apes movies know the apes are the stars and not the humans. Woody Harrelson is maybe the best human character in these movies and he wasn't even that interesting. Caesar is a great character, Koba in the second one was a great villain too.

Yeah I read somewhere that they ran into Woody's crew and were killed after they told him about Ceaser

Read the original Hamm script. The disease wipes out the higher cerebral functions of the survivors. Script was actually pretty good. It can be found online.

Thought it was great. That colonel is an idiot though. He should have killed Caesar instead of just releasing him into the general "slave" population.

He knew the other apes looked up to Caesar as a leader. If he broke Caesar, the rest would fall in line much more easy. If he out right killed Casar, they would probably refuse to work or even revolt. He couldn't afford to kill too many of them because he needed them to build his wall. He used Caesar to control the others.

Not canon.

You aren't even referencing an early draft of this movie, but instead a preliminary draft of a remake from the mid 90s that was also dropped when they actually did the remake with Burton.

Hell, it's from so long ago that it's entirely possible that the current crew is only aware of that script in passing. It was nearly 20 years old when the FIRST movie came out after all.

The overall plots are so wildly different that I wouldn't read into details given in one as explanation for the other over a single superficial similarity.

I mean, another trait of that virus was to leave adults alone, but cause newborns to rapidly sicken and die. The survivors immunity came from also having suppressed intelligence.

Oh, and the virus came from an ape planet as a means of genocide

Not exactly definitive in this version.

Nah, they were weak as hell without him. Surely he had to have known that Caesar alive was a much bigger risk. At least separate him or keep him heavily guarded.

The wall was stupid and pointless. Ain't no ape made wall gonna stop tanks and Apache helicopters
