Yeah. No kidding I watched it yesterday and kept thinking about it today. Now I'm trying primer.

This movie didn't affect me like the rest of y'all. Loved the pacing and loved the music, but I just thought the story was kinda weak. You can be vague and still have a story. Primer was definitely a better film.

I can think of many different adjectives to describe the story, but I don't think weak would be one of them.

Ok maybe not weak bc it did keep me interested the entire film, but I guess I just wanted a bit more.

You take away the editing, eternal sunshine of the spotless mind voice overs, and wind chimes soundtrack and strip it off.

You're left with a story where a people are robbed after ingesting a organic parasite, those parasites are transferred to pigs and two pigs who fall in love cause two victims to fall in love, the pig farmer voyeurs into their lives and unknowingly continues the cycle towards flowers until he is killed

Definitely not weak, but not something many would be interested in if filmed in a traditional format .

There's definitely more to the story than that.

For example, did the people fall in love and cause the pigs to or vice versa? Or was it neither, but rather a product of a biological imperative caused by the life cycle of the worm. Was he killed because of voyeurism or because of the pigs maternal instinct acted out through the woman? There are multiple explanations for lots of the actions in the film.

Just finished it a little while ago. What a mindfrick, but in a good way. There are a lot of things said in this thread that I agree with, but I'm gonna let it sit for another day and revisit this thread tomorrow and try to collect my thoughts about this one.

Definitely an interesting journey watching and figuring this movie out. And I saw someone earlier say that primer was better than UC. I agree, but that's not a slight to UC...that's just a testament to how good Primer is. Not to mention that the more I think about UC, the more I will like/appreciate it I think.

But I could see some people hating it.

I didn't hate it, but I didn't like it or love it like others in this thread. I may have had high expectations because of this thread though. Generally, I like vague, pick your own meaning, artsy films like this, but this one just didn't do anything for me. There was no personal message for me. Whereas, for example, Tree of Life, I felt a personal message.

Spoiler-ish discussion

quote:

Pig Farmer = God

I thought this at many times about halfway through the movie, but in the end, I did not think that to be the case. The people = the cattle (pigs); and He is the shepherd. At this point, I thought the movie was going somewhere.

There are a lot of places to go with the god=pig farmer. If god has a plan, it is just a rhythm that draws us around, not a direct plan. He watches over the pigs. Life is a cycle, and he is just but a part.

But I was ultimately left feeling as though this was not the message.

And in the end, this is all I appreciated. Its style. It kept me interested from the beginning. It somehow had a realistic/ tangible feel to it, even though it was disjointed and about psychotropic worms. And the score was great. Otherwise, the story just didn't have an impact on me, which I imagine happens with films like this. Either you get something personal out of it (me & Tree of Life), or you don't (me & Upstream Color).

Primer was great.

This was like Primer directed by Terrence Malik circa 1990's.

This movie made me think of the old MTV...I sort of miss music videos...I got a lot of stuff done watching this - so that made me happy...like the pigs.

The editing was insane yet fascinating.

I guess I am a little upset with the lack of conflict resolution in regards to the thief. And even the lack of ever knowing who he is or how he used the worms to control people.

I also am a little unclear as to what is the point of informing everyone that they had been "infected" and then having everyone come to the farm.

Because everyone who had been infected has had their lives destroyed without knowing why or how. They knew they were different but did not understand it. Now they know. They also had psychic or emotional attachments to their pigs, and can stay to take care of them if they want.

I think each one of them was felt disoriented from the experience obviously, but I believe the worm transferred made it worse. Since they're forever connected to the pig, you can almost say that they're forever somewhere else.

So maybe bringing them back together made them fee l "normal" again.

Trying to comprehend this movie is a mistake. Just chalk it up as mindfrick and move on.
