I'm just getting to watch episode 2. I'm loving it. It's pretty hardcore. The white wife's acting leaves much to be desired. And the main characters family's lack of understanding of why he is uncomfortable being there is ridiculous to the point of being unbelievable.
Leila, the brothers wife, dear lord, she is gorgeous.

I like it thus far but agree with you that it shouldn't be difficult to understand why Barry is uncomfortable there
Also the flashback scene with Jamal's wife stripping down for Barry made me very uncomfortable, felt like I was watching a 15 year old get naked

This pretty much sums up the whole show thus far

Yeah this is all true. And it seems like it's unfolding into "the Westerner comes into the middle eastern country and changes their ways" kind of story, which is kind of hokey
But still I'm liking it. It's keeping me entertained, and Barry actually showed a little emotion in tonight's episode.
Highlight for me has been Jamal, he's a good character and the actor does a good job with it.

Yes, she is. May be the best looking woman on TV right now.
I'm really digging the show, aside from the gay son scenes. It's totally superfluous to the overall story. I did enjoy Barry bitchslapping him in the 2nd episode, though.

The acting really needs some work - particularly from Barry/Bassem IMO. Why they had to throw in the token gay kid, I have no idea. Maybe they'll use it against Bassem in the future - who knows.

Bassem had a little victory last night, but the tables will be turned on him before long. Even now, he still had to go along with hanging a guy from a crane in public without a trial, just a confession that he personally found satisfactory, which is already pretty distant from being a true Westerner.

Whenever Jamal is on screen, I get the feeling something terrible can happen at any moment.

Adam Rayner is an absolutely atrocious leading man so far and everything to do with his character's family is so badly written and acted I can't believe it exists.
Despite that, there is a good show in here somewhere. The most recent episode was the best one yet (minus the gay scene and anything with his wife). Too bad dumb and naive blondie didn't just go home.
I think the most important thing the show needs to do is to make this Abbudin country pop and feel real. Right now it just feels so fake. We need to know what this country is really like to live in. They haven't captured that at all yet.
I'm afraid though that his family will become so unbearable that it will be the ultimate unraveling of the show.

I'm trying to get in to this show, but it has been difficult.

I mentioned in the first thread that I sort of cringed at where the gay son's storyline might go, but on further reflection, I'm fascinated by this angle of the story. Two of the pillars of Hollywood liberalism, homosexuals are perpetual victims of violence/Islam is a religion of peace, are headed for a collision. How will they play this?

I hope they have read Peter Bergen's "Holy War, Inc":
quote:
Taliban religious scholars labored over the vital question of how to deal with homosexuals: "Some say we should take these sinners to a high roof and throw them down, while others say we should dig a big hole beside a wall, bury them, then push the wall on top of them."

What is the boards impression of the new FX show?
Watched the first episode/pilot and completely forgot about it until I saw this thread.

The show is not very good. But not much else on TV now so I guess I'll keep watching it.

True. Check out The Bridge, so much better than Tyrant.

I have bridge dvrd but need to watch first season first

I don't know why, but I couldn't get into The Bridge. Watched 5-6 episodes and just quit.
