star trek
Star Trek suffered a massive cut in its budget for its third and final year. It was, however, poor ratings primarily due to a poor time slot (which caused creator Gene Roddenberry to step away from it) that got it canceled.

Rome was originally a co-production of HBO and the BBC.

BBC pulled out and HBO just limped along until a weak climax.

Battlestar Galactica's expensive production & falling ratings forced writers to wrap up the series prematurely.

That’s not why GoT was cancelled.

I was more making a joke that they 'cancelled' it by quickly wrapping it up in 6 episodes into a neat pile of shite

Rome is always at the top of the list, but I don’t understand why it was so expensive.

It didn’t have wide, sweeping sets. Most scenes were shot in alleyways, single rooms of a villa, taverns, tents, etc.

The battle scenes were very limited. Go back and watch it, and at least 95% of the scenes look like they were filmed on a sound stage.

David Milch's Luck on HBO. Canceled during the production of season 2. The cost was more than just money...

Period pieces are always more expensive than current stories (The Godfather film was originally going to be set in 1970 in order to save money)

Sets
Costumes
Props
Horses -- Ever watched an old western and see somebody drive a buckboard/wagon into town? Well it turns out that shot was probably a pain in the arse to get, b/c you don't just turn a horse wagon around -- these types of shots can take 20 minute to set up. If anything goes wrong -- actor sneezes, car drives by in background, etc -- another take will be necessary, 20 minutes later. Time is money on a film set.

Animals always take time to work with. Some animals are more equally easy to work with than others: one of the reasons movie/TV characters usually own dogs instead of housecats is b/c dogs are much easier to train.

Supposedly the cat in Breakfast at Tiffany's was a nightmare, delaying filming as well as scratching both Hepburn and Peppard.

As others have said, Rome is the poster child for this.

Supposedly James Purefoy (Antony) and Kevin McKidd (Vorenus) had a pact to never appear on Game of Thrones because they stole their show's budget, but could have just been a bit of humor on Purefoy's part (he did say inconsistent things on the subject).

Weren’t Arrested Development woes exacerbated by its production cost?

Jonny Quest.
Ran in prime time originally in 1964-65, but was too expensive.
Greatest animated show ever.

I don't know how it really compares, but Magic City cost 110 million for the first two seasons or something, and it being expensive was a reason given for not continuing it.

From watching it, it felt like it'd be expensive to make.
